Taylor Swift - '1989 (Taylor's Version)'

I think it's difficult for us not to be picky... we've sat with these songs for 9 years. We're going to notice differences, even if they might be very, very minor.

I still remember being angry over how badly Taylor botched Sparks Fly TV but I ended up coming round to it... maybe the same thing will happen with Style. Maybe.

And wew... Ryan Tedder you really fumbled the bag with those opening synths on WTNY.

Yeah I can see this pulling pretty similar AM numbers to SNTV and slightly higher Spotify numbers, and the pure sales will be astronomical. They honestly might be the reason it’s not outperforming SNTV :gaycat6: along with the fact that she’s no longer actively on tour in the US of course

Spoiler

*Keep in mind the Drake and Bad Bunny album bombs and the difference of time for the AM US updates before thinking SNTV and 1989TV are performing that similarly

1989 is not my favourite album and not even close, so I didn't have high expectations, but... somehow she ruined only some of the singles.
Blank Space is okay, I love it as a whole, but her voice isn't giving the character this song is about.
Style... I don't think it's bad bad, but it definately lost it's dark sexy vibe, now it's lust giving "partying with friends"
Shake It Off is bad. Both her and instrumental sounds like it was recorded in the bathroom. The only thing I love is the bridge, it's really good and may be even better than og.
Bad Blood is okay but the same thing like Blank Space, there's no rage and no anger in her voice
New Romantics is 50/50, something is wrong with it, in the og the sound was clearer and her voice too.

I can't say that it "worst re-record" cause both Red and Speak Now has it's flaws. I'd say it's average mid re-record.

does the vault sound like it’s from Midnights? yes

BUT

I think gays here are forgetting that she re-recorded these songs. she probably recorded them a certain way for 1989 and changed the instrumental for the TV. yea it’s a shame but doesn’t mean it’s not from the sessions :rip:

The first verse in Suburban Legends feels “newer” to me when it comes to lyrics

Yep and the way she sings "I let it slide" is the exact same as "Once upon a time" in Mastermind

I knew I was forgetting something and now I feel like a clown once again for doubting THEE 1989 :rip:

It's doing 70X better than SN on UK AM so I wonder if the global numbers will be higher as we can see in the US they are similar.

Yeah. For me personally Say Don't Go and Is It Over Now? sounds pretty similar to 1989 sound. Suburban Legends sounds like Midnights, but If you look at the lyrics, it's screaming 1989 too. I think it Jack's problem with his modern production style.

There are two versions of 1989 TV on AM now + two biggest streaming artists released albums in the last 2-3 weeks. It's doing definitely bigger numbers on AM than Speak Now TV.

So... in all it's cute. There has to be so much work that goes into rerecording these songs, such as either locating or recreating the exact male vocal sample that runs throughout Out Of The Woods. (This review may be critical, but it's because my standards are high for queen Taylor).

Style is one of my favourite songs ever - the production on the original is unbelievably perfect. It genuinely feels like a truly perfect song. And that version is still available in the world, which is good because this version is a disappointment. The guitar tone is so far off, I don't know how she couldn't correct it as it's easily one of her best songs. Oh well, as I said, we still have the original. The new version is still serviceable, I like that it's a slightly darker sounding version of Style, it just doesn't have the same rush as the original.

Shake It Off has a horrid mid range frequency running throughout the track. And New Romantics' chorus :rip:. I think there's too much reverb on lots of the tracks too.

Blank Space and Clean are recreated quite well though, and overall the tracks sound very close to the original.

I really like ****! and Is It Over Now? from the vault tracks, but my favourite is Say Don't Go. It's a very pretty extension of the 1989 sound. Although some of the tracks sound like they were written recently, it doesn't bother me: we always ask artists for unreleased material and here she is giving it to us. Even if it's more recent, they're still a very welcome extension to the era.

Damn this review sounds negative... ultimately I love that she acknowledges her past eras and continues to introduce this music to new generations. I wish there could have been a bit more care placed into the album, but I understand she has a mammoth amount of work to do within the rerecords that a lot of artists wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

Blank Space sweetie I'm sorry that you had to be compared with that :rip:

Could y’all remind us what songs Speak Now were contending with on release week in terms of streaming juggernauts?

I personally like the new Shake It Off waaaaay better than the old one, especially from the bridge onward

Agree, it’s a clear improvement to me. I will probably keep Style original version but SIO and BS are great
