Now, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Red TV's vault alone makes it far superior to the other re-recordings.

1989 TV is still really great. Actually I think I love 99% of all the re-recorded material. There's so very very few (and specific) things that I'm not sold on.

Holy Ground TV though...

I feel like people calling vault tracks as Midnights rejects only because they have different image of the album in their head.. For them 1989 is Style, Blank Space and Wildest Dreams. For me it's OOTW, New Romantics and IWYW (and Style obviously :eddie:).... these vault tracks totally sound like they belong to 1989

Right ! If anything the vault tracks have more 80s vibes than a lot of the main album and thus make more sense with the them of the album

I just love that the thread is mostly positive now that the drama queens have left. :jonny5:

Yeah there were like 3 crazy people here last night that drove me crazy!

I don't know. RED was never a perfect album, imo. It's was too messy. 1989 has always been the perfect pop album. So it's natural for me to prefer 1989 to it.

Tick-tock on the clock, I pace down your block
I broke my own heart 'cause you were too polite to do it
Waves crash on the shore, I dash to the door
You don't knock anymore and my whole life's ruined
Tick-tock on the clock, I pace down your block
I broke my own heart 'cause you were too polite to do it
Waves crash to the shore, I dash to the door
You don't knock anymore and I always knew it
That my life would be ruined

I can understand that. I personally love the messiness of Red. It's all over the place which is perfectly in line with the emotions you feel after a hard break-up. The messiness just adds to the story imo (and also I much prefer the songs on Red overall).

Wait I like Bad Blood better too :jonny:

Okay, now that I've had time to sit with it... on a whole, I'm very happy.

From the Vault tracks:

**** - 7/10 (It's got a little Maroon going on, the pre-chorus is beautiful but overall it's nothing special)

Say Don't Go - 9/10 (Absolutely phenomenal. I'm amazed this didn't at least become a bonus track... up there with All Too Well 10MV and Nothing New for my fave vault songs)

Now That We Don't Talk - 5/10 (The chorus is just a bit flat... doesn't hit for me, at least not yet)

Suburban Legends - 6/10 (I'd like this a lot more if Mastermind and Question didn't exist... it's just too samey to stuff she's already done - Jack, sis CHANGE IT UP)

Is It Over Now? - 8/10 (We're finishing strong. Solid closer)

As for the re-recordings, oooh, it's a mixed bag.

She nailed it:

-

Blank Space

Out of The Woods - dare I say, this version is even better?

I Wish You Would

Wildest Dreams

This Love

Clean - This was the one song I wanted her not to butcher... and it's gorgeous. I love this version so much.

You Are In Love

Pretty good:

-

All You Had To Do Was Stay

I Know Places

Bad Blood

Wonderland

New Romantics

Not bad, but Scooter outsold:

-

Welcome To New York

Shake It Off

How You Get The Girl

Doctor, she's BOTCHED:

-

Style - I'm so angry about that intro. Jesus.

The 80s vibe is actually more present here, which was always my main problem with the album. As great as it was, 1989 was never 80s enough. Now I can hear it. Damn like there’s a delicious synth line underneath the Shake it Off chorus that they drowned with the horns. The bridge sounds better and more Mickey indebted. Now we can hear everything. Only thing the OG was better was the robotic background vocals layering for the last chorus but Max is a master at that

Nothing could've prepared me for how bad Style is, why wouldn't she get a pop producer to get that one right? I know she didn't get Max Martin and Shellback back, but like that is not it, sounds like she got a karaoke machine and sung it. :deadbanana2:

It's also so jarring after Welcome to New York and Blank Space were ok (albeit I miss the satisfying pen click from the OG).

people saying 80s synth midtempos are out of place on an album inspired by 80s music called 1989 :deadbanana4:

Because it's not THAT different like people in here try to say. I mean when I first heard it I was thinking "oh I won't be able to recognize the song that i've listen to 7 million times I'm sure!!" and... nothing happened. Still amazing song.
