MIAB was was originally written before all of the other Max Matin/Shellback songs on Red. Taylor herself has said that MIAB was the first time she and Max ever collaborated, which may be why it wasn't released until like 2 years ago. Maybe she was just testing the water by dipping her toes into it and when it felt good and safe, they went on to make more songs like 22 and IKYWT.

I didn’t mean that they worked on the song late in the Red cycle, but you kind of see the beginnings of 1989 on it - just badly. I would guess they worked on that song, discarded it, wrote the Red songs (which are completely different), then *kind of* went back in the MIAB direction (except good) for 1989. The point is by 1989 they were established as a duo, so I don’t see why they would’ve made several songs that were too weak to even make it as bonus tracks.

I think original 2012 Message in a bottle sounds like 22 or other Red songs, but her version has Elvira production and that's why it has 1989 vibes.
