DonnaSpring Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 Hi All, First of all, this is my first post so apologies if anything is wrong. I wanted to ask, does anyone else find themselves listening to more and more older artists, alot of these current new artists seem so Gen Z that their songs don't appeal to me. Even my concerts this year Beyonce Shania Twain Madonna x 3 But alot of new singers like billie, Olivia they just dont appeal to me? im listening to Donna Summer's All systems go album while I write this For me its these things Modern songs are too short, songs under 2 mins 30 are ringtones, not songs and even under 3 mins i dont like alot of them No singers, none of these new singers can sing properlly like Mariah, whitney , Celine, Patti, Chrstina , Leona Lewis etc, these people knew how to sing and sing LIVE lack of originality, far too many samples and no original songs Songs are getting to basic and lacking depth, melodies are becoming boring, bridges have been removed to keep songs short and everything seems tiktok focussed now which has ruined music Too much autotune, the worst invention for music, I love listening to pre autotune songs because you can hear the voice much more clearly Artists dont release enough albums , Donna summer was releasing albums every year, like Mariah and many others, but many artists are releasing with huge gaps, Why has cardi so man singles yet only 1 album? as one example 2 2
Europe Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 I listen to mostly new music or songs from the last 10 years, but looking at streaming trends, a lot of people seem to do it the way you do and I get why. You probably have more of a connection to those artists and their songs are more meaningful to you. Like Vampire will be for current 6 year olds.
WokeEqualist Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 Even though many current artists produce amazing music, the impact TikTok has had on the industry is undeniable, the way most songs are under 3 minutes long and feature TikTok trend-baiting lyrics is annoying, so I definitely understand turning to older music as an escape from this
Devin Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 I stream everybody to stay current and see whats new BUT since 2020 I been stuck on streaming 90s/early 00s R&B and Rap music. Also most new artists I been a fan of lately are underground and non-mainstream.
OnikaSlays Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 I love discovering new music, but yeah, I find myself going back to a lot of older stuff that I listened to in the past. 1
Matthew4815 Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 I definitely have been listening to more older music lately. It's nostalgic. Music and memory have such a connection. I associate older music with a memory of the past and it's comforting. That being said - I do love discovering new music too but not as much lately because as you said - a lot of it doesn't click with me.
brooklyndaddy Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 I almost exclusively listen to music pre 1995 and look at this site kind of more of a product of the decline of music (from an artistic standpoint). Not to say that there aren’t some good artists that have debuted in the last 20 or so years but who’s topping the charts? Stuff that’s pretty garbage compare to likes of legends like: David Bowie The Beatles Whitney Houston Michael Jackson Madonna Very few “stars” nowadays hold a single candle. That said, I’m not really a post Y2K radio pop, rap, generic EDM or country stan so I only really enjoy Rock, Metal, Industrial, Folk and Singer-songwriter/alternative stuff so here’s who I’ve been listening to lately that are easily outdoing most artists today: The Velvet Underground Lou Reed The Beatles The Zombies Bowie Gang of Four Patti Smith Joni Mitchell Siouxsie and The Banshees The Cure Bauhaus Clan of Xymox New York Dolls This Mortal Coil Slowdive My Bloody Valentine Elliott Smith Red House Painters PJ Harvey Bjork Roxy Music anybody with similar music taste lmk, I know this a pop music forum but just wondering if we have any more seasoned listeners here no shade at all either if you only like radio pop, I’m just more about the music not the bling 1
DamianSolo Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 You said it all in a nutshell, I feel the same exact way about the current state of (mainstream) music with these newer artists. At first I thought it was just me getting older, but—no—it all really does just mostly suck. The current state of the music industry is in a very sad place.
Katamari Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 the billboard 200 is nothing but older studio albums and Gh collections so you are not the only one 1
HASHTAGPOW Posted August 8, 2023 Posted August 8, 2023 I grew up listening to classical music like Mozart, Vivaldi, and, Ava Max. 2
Proseductice Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I've always liked older music because it was what I was exposed to growing up. 60's-90's and early 2000's is so good.
Onyxmage Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Not me seeing this thread as I just discovered a new artist a few minutes ago and am loving their music. I cannot STAND older music. It sounds so dated and overplayed. The fact that some of those artists you mentioned have been out since I was in diapers or even before. I just dont get it.
Oktober Knight Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Older music>>>> Tom Petty Fleetwood Mac Steve Miller Band Mowtown Cher Michael Jackson Madonna Janet Jackson Etc
CBC Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 i mean billie and olivia are bottom of the barrel contemporary music so I get why you'd wanna listen to the old classics. nothing wrong with that i luv to listen to old music too but i think you're just not looking in the right places, there's been a lot of great music releases in the past few years
DammnBaby Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) Most older music is superior *music* - production, melody, lyrics and vocals. The reason why Taylor Swift is so successful is because she writes songs for listeners who actually want to go on a journey, not for TikTok users with five-second attention spans. Ger Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Absolutely, don't have too much excitement on new releases besides some exceptions. My member title explains it.
The Prophecy Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 yeah, i've been listening to a lot of taylor lately
Hi-res Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I’ll always check out new releases, but I mainly listen to 80s-00s music. 1
HïFidelity Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 (edited) I love older music, but to be honest OP, a lot of older music was very short in song as well. Especially the 60s and 70s when music had to fit on tiny little vinyls (45s) to be consumed by teenagers. Longer songs / singles didn’t really become popular until CD and cassette singles became very popular in the 80s. Edited August 9, 2023 by HïFidelity
kandicha Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 yes because there's just so many years of music to discover/re-discover. it's also interesting to see how music has changed and evolved. 1
Heat Waves Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 Most of my favorite tracks are from 2000 - 2003
