I felt like he was gay and totally interested in Oliver My straight friends didn’t see that at all I found this, it doesn’t say much but makes a good read https://www.thepinknews.com/2023/10/05/saltburn-director-emerald-fennell-confirms-queer-jacob-elordi-barry-keoghan/ Definitely not gay since he was ******* women, maybe bi, but that just looked wishful thinking on Oliver’s part. I loved the movie. Rosamund was so good. Barry will prob get nominated for an Oscar. Carey seemed underused? Pity about that. The only thing for me, once that scene happens with Felix, it felt a bit rushed after it to me. 3
Konril Posted January 10 Posted January 10 Sophie Ellis-Bextor - Murder On The Dancefloor (as featured in Saltburn) Oh she is marketing this song. Go Queen, GO!!! 4 1

The same people who probably watch one movie per month. Promising Young Woman was great but I just don't understand how that Emerald girlie could go from PYW to some Mr Ripley x Parasite crossover written from memory. The class commentary people are mentioning is nowhere to be found. You don't even have to be a movie buff to be able to see through the bullshit of this movie. What pissed me off the most is a person that I know (wouldn't call him a friend) literally hosted a Saltburn-themed party when he reeks of privilege and has grown surrounded by wealth. Embarrassing. TikTok made it out as if Jacob and Barry would be ******* each other in the bath tub. Some people have a such low threshold of what is considered shocking or disturbing. Eating a cum-filled peach or drinking bathtub cum water is none of that. Yeah, it gave doesn’t have the vernacular it thinks it possesses. When you think about it, it was a lot like The Favourite without any of the cleverness or really getting into its themes. Still mostly enjoyed it for what it was and the cute visuals. 1

So to me it kinda makes sense why the obsession story felt incomplete. Its the same "disconnect", as you say, or doubt that the other characters around Felix feel about Oliver. They tried to trick viewers into thinking its about his obsession until the last act, where they reveal the elaborate plot. I agree though, movies like these often leaves a lot of questions. Still enjoyable though. On 1/5/2024 at 8:50 PM, harwee said: Hide contents I think that's still about the wealth, about either acquiring or defiling Saltburn. The point being Felix was a vehicle to achieve either or both. Also i think people with some money are just as obsessed with wealth if not more, so him being from suburbs doesn't cancel that motive. Interesting thoughts though, it'd be interesting to watch that video. Spoiler The way I took it, and I think that would make the obsession story a bit more well-rounded and complete, is that Oliver didn't want Felix, he wanted to be Felix. In his monologue, he explicitly says he wasn't in love with Felix, but that he nevertheless loved him... and also hated him. He wanted to be the enigmatic, handsome, charming, interesting, eccentric, outgoing and beloved guy that everything comes naturally to and doesn't have to pretend to be semi-liked like he does. He was jealous of him. He was in love with the essence of Felix as a person, not Felix himself (which is also why it didn't really seem like he was actually devastated or mourning Felix on a deeper level). The cum thing would also make sense here as it's literally like ingesting a man's "essence". Regarding the wealth, I see it as more of a sick, narcissistic role-play. Oliver didn't strike me as particularly materialistic, there wasn't really anything in the movie that would have hinted at that as far as I remember. In the end, he sort of replaced and in his own world became Felix as the man of the house and heir of Saltburn and I think that's what he wanted more than the wealth itself.

Lost In Paradise Posted January 11 Posted January 11 no one mentions that first 30 min of the film are such a draggggg it picks up toward the end when it gets dark Spoiler the lunch scene after the death is probably the best part, along with the ending but yeah I think people just didn't have much to talk about online in the last few weeks. this doesn't nearly deserve all the discourse
unclefloprry Posted January 12 Posted January 12 movie was cool a bit predictable on some "shocking" scenes Spoiler the deaths, it was obvious what would happen next. I can't think of another movie that made me feel this uncomfortable in years, I paused this a lot lmao Spoiler apart from the bath scene, the clown kiss lmao and when he fucks Felix's grave; the scene where no one said his name at his birthday party or when they visited his parents + other scenes... dude, I really felt bad for him
KeirGrey Posted January 12 Posted January 12 I think the start and the ending could have been trimmed that said I just loved the shots and the acting.

But you're not completely wrong. The director actually said that in Oliver's mind, the happiest ending would be if they lived happily ever after, alone, in the house. It just didn't turn out that way for him. So it’s kind of a love that turned into “I want to be you” kind of identity crisis. Spoiler I think that's intentional. We weren't shown that part of him to not spoil the surprise reveal. This is similar to how the characters know little about Oliver.
MatiRod Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Barry Keoghan is going to have a gay fanbase for the rest of his life thanks to that scene 2

It's not really that serious though, some people just like the movie. And I wouldn't say the class commentary is nowhere to be found, it is a pretty humorous take on social class/wealth specifically in the UK
illia Posted January 20 Posted January 20 (edited) It was... weird. All style no substance The cinematography is the only thing I loved about the movie Edited January 20 by illia
Strawberry Bubble Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I didn't like this film :(. It was just not for me
Mandalore Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Style over substance. Paper thin characters. Laughably predictable plot.
