X~MoviePoP Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I mean...r we suprised...the movies literally- ...nvm
Da Vinci Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Japan is the only country to experience the atomic bomb (twice at that) so I get the reactions The memes could've omitted the bomb/mushroom cloud let alone the addition of Margot's happy face on it But the Cillian x Margot edits (without the explosions) are fine I think? 1
MingYouToo Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Honestly this was oversight on the Mattel marketing team (its clear they're the ones payola'ing the movie to hell and back and its paying off... except this time). They should've reeled back on integrating too much Barbie on the Oppenheimer aesthetic.
FailSafe Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 It's completely understandable. Those marketing posts are distasteful 1
fromily Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 I got the initial humour about barbie and oppenheimer being released on the same day like 'haha it's a really serious christopher nolan movie and the BARBIE movie wow they're so different lol' but honestly everything since then has seemed majorly inappropriate :/ I think a HUGE contributing factor is that very very few young people (millenials & gen z basically) had even heard of oppenheimer before this movie and therefore didn't make the connection that the movie was going to be about the development of nuclear weaponry. Most of the chatter I've overheard about it in passing has been that it's a "war movie." And the trailer (at least the one I saw) doesn't make it any clearer, because it too assumes that you already know who oppenheimer was and what he is famous for. *Major disclaimer* that I'm Australian so idk if it's different elsewhere. Zero excuses for the actual movie promoters trying to take advantage tho (as in the op's example).
uusagii Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 And yet they continue to deny Imperial Japan's war crimes and teach kids they actually helped South Korea and China during the war 7
Jude Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Understandable but eh, Barbie is still grossing $1B regardless so I don't think Warner Bros is worried. 1
Doogle Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Good, less people in the cinema for my screening when it comes out here Jokes aside it’s fair. The film isn’t even being released here for obvious reasons
Harrier Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Understandable response I do think it is distasteful to lean too much into ~atmoic bomb chic~ aesthetic
tellem Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 The edits with the bomb they’re not wrong to be mad about that
Rep2000 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 So did they boycott Oppenheimer as well? Or just Barbie?

There's no scene of the bomb using in combat, only the testing of it. What happened to Japan is only in the dialogue. In fact it's an anti-war, anti-nuclear bomb movie, considering why Oppenheimer was prosecuted in the 3rd act of the movie.
Butters Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 boosting that hair edit was kinda crazy of the barbie marketing team like its just a generic mushroom cloud to us but to them it represents something that killed thousands upon thousands of innocent civilians. i understand why they’d boycott for that
Margaux Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 tbf japan had raped and committed genocide of millions of people from different countries. and they can’t take any accountability to it. they even erase it onto their history, now they are scared that people would find out why they were bombed in the first place 9

People are not fully aware of the atrocities that country committed and it's so, so insane. - Yeah, the meme was kinda tacky at times. But Oppenheimer truly makes it clear that the US was a cesspool governed and run by monsters. 1
