Legacy

220px-Taylor_Swift_Eras_Tour_-_Arlington%2C_TX_-_Folklore_act_2.jpg Swift performing the Folklore act of her Eras Tour (2023)

Folklore's release ignited widespread interest in the term "folklore" on the internet. In response to this mainstream attention, the American Folklore Society launched a website titled "What is Folklore?" and engaged in an online campaign to educate passersby about folklore studies. Folklorists were recruited to promote the academic field to the general public via social media.[251] Metacritic's traffic skyrocketed by roughly half a million views upon Folklore's release. The site's founder Marc Doyle stated, "There's nothing quite like Taylor Swift", whose albums supply "a great deal of traffic and user participation" to the site whenever they are released.[252]

The album has been contextualized as a lockdown project by commentators,[253] and earned a reputation as the archetypal quarantine album.[254] The Guardian opined that Folklore was a respite from chaotic events.[65] The Daily Telegraph called it "an exquisite, empathetic lockdown triumph".[55] NME wrote the album will be remembered as "the quintessential lockdown album" that "felt like the perfect accompaniment for the weird loneliness" of 2020.[255][164] Insider stated that Folklore would be known as "lockdown's one true masterpiece".[143] Rolling Stone said the album may go down in history as "the definitive quarantine album" for providing comfort and catharsis "just when we needed it most".[142] Billboard proclaimed that Folklore would be cherished as one of Swift's most influential albums.[6] Uproxx noted how Folklore changed the tone of music in 2020,[256] and its impact on the year's cultural landscape "can't be measured".[146]

In a list awarding the most creative works that shaped quarantine, Vulture labeled Folklore as 2020's "Best Breakdown in Musical Form" for addressing topics of loneliness.[257] Vogue listed the album amongst the best moments of lockdown culture.[258] The Week called it "the first great pandemic art" for setting "a high bar" for future pandemic-inspired projects.[259] Financial Times called it "the first great lockdown album",[260] while Hot Press termed it "the first great album of the lockdown era".[261] Judging from its acclaim and commercial success, critic Tom Hull concluded that Swift "caught the spirit of the times" with Folklore.[262] Billboard named Folklore and Evermore as the best examples of innovative albums from artists who amended their creative process during the pandemic,[263] and in a list titled "The 25 Musical Moments That Defined the First Quarter of the 2020s", called the album a "commercial smash" that stands as "one of the quintessential quarantine full-lengths".[264] In 2023, The New York Times named Folklore as one of the "17 pop culture moments that define the COVID era".[265]

My world felt opened up creatively. There was a point that I got to as a writer who only wrote very diaristic songs that I felt it was unsustainable for my future moving forward. So what I felt after we put out Folklore was like "oh wow, people are into this too, this thing that feels really good for my life and feels really good for my creativity… it feels good for them too?"

— Swift on how Folklore changed her creative process moving forward, Apple Music 1[266]

The making of and rave reception to Folklore encouraged Swift to release Evermore. Swift herself has credited Folklore for ushering a new mindset of songwriting in her repertoire, which in turn influenced her subsequent releases.[63] Folklore was the most popular album of 2020 on Genius,[267] and Swift was the top searched act.[268] She was also the world's highest-paid solo musician of 2020,[269] and the highest paid in the US, solely due to her incomes from the 2020 albums.[270] In 2023, Swift embarked on the Eras Tour, which consisted of 10 acts, the seventh of which is dedicated to Folklore.[271]

Influence on contemporaries[edit]

Hayley Williams of Paramore described her second solo studio album, Flowers for Vases / Descansos, as her Folklore.[272] Phoebe Bridgers suggested that her next record could be inspired by Folklore.[273] Critics have noted influences of Folklore in Olivia Rodrigo's debut album, Sour (2021), and its lead single "Drivers License".[274][275] Spanish singer-songwriter Zahara released a song titled "Taylor" in tribute to Swift, and credited Folklore for encouraging her to compose music again following months of isolation.[276] Croatian singer Mia Dimšić named Folklore as an inspiration for "Guilty Pleasure", her song representing Croatia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2022.[277][278] Christina Perri and Sabrina Carpenter credited Folklore with encouraging them to be emotionally honest in their songs without worrying about external expectations.[279][280] Japanese-British singer-songwriter Rina Sawayama cited the poetic and fictitious traits of Folklore as a source of inspiration for her second studio album, Hold the Girl (2022).[281] Bridgerton writer Abby McDonald stated the track "Illicit Affairs" inspired writing the episode "An Unthinkable Fate" of the series' second season.[282] American singer-songwriter and actress Maya Hawke was inspired by Folklore's compositions for her second studio album, Moss (2022).[283] After Folklore, artists such as Hawke,[284] Gracie Abrams,[285] Ed Sheeran,[286] King Princess,[287] and Girl in Red[288] chose to collaborate with Dessner and record songs at his Long Pond Studio.[287]

How is Anti more global than Foklore ? Outside the US Folklore sold more units, if anything its US success is what makes Anti bigger for now.

Folklore has slightly higher sps globally and the gap will grow. Anti is only higher in the US.

uhm Anti has 1.4m certified units outside the US and folklore has 500k ish…

the former is certified in 15 countries vs 12 countries for folklore

"certified" :rip:

Certifications are not automatic/don't exist in most countries for instance even in the US Folklore is much more undercertified than Anti.

Thankfully we don't need certifications to estimate the global sps units of albums.

And it only took a Superbowl and a vinyl release for that...

Right now it's #93 in the BB200, and the gap is much bigger globally.

Using istan4MUAriri's logic, Midnights is only at 2M in the US since it's only certified 2X Platinum despite it actually moving 5.4M units so far :dies: Absolute lunacy

Folklore, a 3 year-old album, will have moved more global units already than Music, a 23 year-old album. Thanks for pointing it out!

Yeah a 3 year old album released by a woman in her 30s with the benefit of streaming services and re-releases vs. an album released by a woman in her 40s on the verge of facing ageism with NO streaming support and soon to be lack of radio airplay.

Thanks for pointing it out!

She's released 8 albums and 16 features in 12 and a half years, no need to exaggerate it. :deadbanana3:

And you're acting like it's easy to release albums & singles frequently and still sell. It shows she always has demand, people could easily get tired of her but they don't.

She has an average of 8.6M equivalent album sales per album.

We have definitive confirmation from the Navy that Taylor’s frequent releases and their success only serve to illustrate her domination :jonny5:

To answer the question it's Music >>> Anti >>>> Folklore

While Folklore was a testament to Taylor's power it really didn't shift that much units outside the U.S. and has only two multi-platinum certs despite three years of tracking and no global hits unlike Music and Anti.
