Of course people can ask for a free copy of an album. It's not like most of them were going to pay money for the album. Look at her other albums' first week sales. People weren't even willing to pay $0.99 for Rated R in week 1

It's been out for 7.5 years vs 3 years for folklore

 

A lot of countries' certs aren't automatic. Take Australia for example. folklore is a gigantic smash there and is only 1X (as is Midnights) despite being 2X or 3X eligible for awhile now  Another reason why just going by certs is moronic

And this right here is the important differentiator that seems to get overlooked here.

 

'folklore' basically caught up to 'ANTI' in just 3 years. When you look at where 'ANTI' itself was 3 years into its respective release, the difference between both albums becomes even more noticeable. It only had 3 billion streams on Spotify back in early 2019. That alone would shave off a whole 2M units from the album's current total, even if one kept using its 2023 stats for the other unit categories (which no doubt where also lower in 2019).

 

And yes, Spotify has grown since 2016, but at the same time pure album sales, digital song sales and the YouTube market have also collapsed. So it evens out. 'folklore' after 3 years is basically at the same numbers as 'ANTI' after 7.5 years, and much higher than where the latter was after its first 3 years. It doesn't get clearer than that.

2nd: 942.000 vs. 635.000
3rd: 789.000 vs. <423.000
4th: 718.000* vs. 370.000

Est. SPS total after 4 full years: 4.653.000* vs. <3.394.000

* 2023 is only halfway through, so folklore will end up even higher.

 

It's always best to to put things into context and acknowledge the sheer time difference one has had over the other.

Rihanna has about the same SPS. She was at over 11 million in 2021 and that was well before the Superbowl.  Anti is a much more popular album.
