Horizon Flame Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 As SNL remains off the air until at least the fall as a result of the strike, a large proportion of viewers appear to be unmoved by its absence, new polling for Newsweek by Redfield & Wilton Strategies shows. Of the 1,500 American adults polled online on July 6, 50 percent said that they didn't miss SNL "at all." Among the younger age groups, Generation Z is the least enthusiastic about the show. 𝙏𝙝𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙮-𝙚𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 18 𝙩𝙤 24 𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥 𝙙𝙤𝙣'𝙩 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙬, 𝙬𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙚 22 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙘𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 25 𝙩𝙤 34 𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙥 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙖𝙢𝙚. 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒓𝒕𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒗𝒊𝒆𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 35 𝒕𝒐 44 𝒔𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝑵L. When the ages go up from there, the indifference to SNL increases dramatically, with 61 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒆 𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒅 45 𝒕𝒐 54 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒎𝒊𝒔𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒘,, followed by 𝟱𝟱 𝘁𝗼 𝟲𝟰 (𝟲𝟯 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁) 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝟲𝟱+ (𝟳𝟰 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁). Of all the age groups, Gen Z spends less time watching traditional linear TV, having essentially grown up in an era of streamed programming. With SNL's format being a live broadcast, this can clash with Gen Z viewing habits. As the show has built its brand on skewering political figures—much to the ire of frequent critic Donald Trump—it is noteworthy that of those who don't miss the show in all age groups, 53 percent voted for the former president in the 2020 election. Democrat President Joe Biden got 41 percent of the vote from those who don't miss SNL. On the positive side of the poll, 18 percent of respondents said that they missed SNL a "significant amount." Those aged 35 to 44 led the pack of fans, with 36 percent missing the show, followed by 25 to 34 (29 percent), 18 to 24 (22 percent), 45 to 54 (14 percent), 55 to 64 (8 percent), and 65+ (3 percent). In November, polling for Newsweek by Redfield & Wilton Strategies showed that just one in five people found the show to be funny. That said, 48 percent of those polled said that SNL was sometimes funny. https://www.newsweek.com/saturday-night-live-has-big-problem-1813787
midnightdawn Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I mean 50% of the total population not missing it doesn't mean much. It's worth comes down to how it rates, the value of the brand to NBC, and the chatter it gets on social media through musical performances and clips being shared. It definitely becomes more relevant and talked about during elections and once the debates start. 5 1
Kern Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I miss SNL but I feel like it's been in decline for some time. A lot of good actors left

I don't get what the correlation is, doesn't SNL always take the summer off and premiere its new season in the fall? how did they arrive at the conclusion it "remains off the air until the fall as a result of the strike"? they're really running out of ways to push the anti-union agenda huh? and how is the 50% number surprising? SNL does not cater to bigots. this really isn't an indicator for anything, it's a clickbait article for right-wing pundits to run with, from an unreliable outlet that loves right-wing web traffic. next 1
Ivan_brit Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I miss artist in general performing at TV but everything is cancelled this year I'ts been months without any music award show..... VMAS hurry up!
Domination Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 SNL has been garbage for like a decade. ATP they have like like one talented cast member at a time.
Rino Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) they were trying to build up that Chloe girl but she simply isn't Kristen Wiig or Kate McKinnon. it's time to hang it up, Lorne Edited July 24, 2023 by Rino
La Reina Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Their political skits are the only ones I really find funny tbh. Maybe they can redeem themselves with the upcoming election which is sure to be a gigantic mess.
Mr. Mendes Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 That's all well and good but it continues to do well in the ratings and it continues to be one of the most vital parts of any album or single promotional campaign. The moment it's back, you best bet it will be booked and busy.
GraceRandolph Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 If it wasn’t one of the places artists perform and promote I would want it cancelled. 2
Breathe On Moi Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 knowing them they’re going to make a thousand skits about this poll next season 1
Junipero Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I never found SNL funny... What makes the show are the performances. Even the "Amanda Show" is funnier than SNL.
PoisonCandy Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Traditional broadcast TV is dying anyway. Millennials are the last generation that really care for it, and even then their interest is dwindling.
ATRL Moderator Bloo Posted July 24, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted July 24, 2023 I mean… I enjoy some SNL skits. But I don’t like them enough to miss it. If the show got cancelled, I honestly do not think I would care one way or the other. Their real test will be the 2024 election cycle. SNL gets more eyes on them when they parody election seasons. Curious to see if they get momentum going into 2024.

KatyPrismSpirit Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 SNL was boring and lame asf. no shade. it has been since like the late 00s. MTV needs to revamp something like TRL. Invite some fans on a nice set, interview the artist that is a guest, do some fun games, Q&A and finish it with a performance. Fans will like this much more than these tired af SNL skits.

Gwendolyn Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I do! No matter how terrible the humour is, the celeb cameos and the musical performances make the show.
Feanor Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 SNL wasn't aiming for the whole American GP lately anyways, so 50% not missing them doesn't have any impact on the show's viability. As long as they can get back their usual 4-5M viewers post-strike, they'll be fine.
