for what? for telling something that Malaysians already know for years:ahh: like damn, people just want to have a good time and listen to music. And here a white man, pointing out trauma as if people do not know. It's dumb.

Your opinions hold no value then :heart2: I suggest befriending a Malaysian, and understanding the political situation and corruption that has been going on within the government and how people are fighting through protests. :heart2:

LMAO! If you can't even grasp the concept of music, as an art form, will always be political.

Then good luck to your prayer circles on the government will change. (It won't!) :heart2:

Pathetic of the festival/government to cancel this and pathetic of the members in here coming for Matty instead of the Malaysian government:ace:

these rats deserve every lashing :clap3:

some people here have normalised the trashy rats' politics and it disgusts me :deadbanana2: textbook Stockholm syndrome behaviours yikes.

Due to his actions, expect the government to raid entertainment events and gatherings.

Yeah, mate, this is not okay. Not because of what Ratty did, but because of how Malaysian government can't even handle a man kissing another man in public.
Like, you can blame Ratty being a white savior foreigner as much as you want. But the nature of how fascist this homophobic government still doesn't change if they can make queer people living in fear like this.

Even if it wasn't necessary, that doesn't mean he's to blame for the government acting homophobically in response. Any government that respects LGBT folks would not cancel a festival over something as benign as two men kissing on stage, and thus the response we see is a symptom of the government's own shitty beliefs :rip:

The gov won't cancel the festival however there's state election in upcoming weeks so the opposition (super ultra-conservative) surely will ride this issue. The gov have no choice but to cancel it before it gets milked and give the opposition more advantages during the election. The current gov is more tolerable although they do not recognize queer community yet they make some good steps to provide human rights for the community back in 2018 unlike the opposition. However, they get toppled over (in undemocratic way) by the opposition in 2020 for sensitive issues but luckily won it back last year. Now this Matt incident gives us 2020 flashback.

After weeks of dragging Matty for being homophobic, ATRL is now dragging him for being too gay :toofunny3:

Yup, I can't really blame them, they do not know how complicated the political situation here. What Matt did basically "helping" the ultra-conservative opposition to come into power, which is what queer community in the country fear the most right now :gaycat7:

With all due respect, I don't trust PN nor the government not to make mountains out of molehills to villainize LGBT groups for votes even if Matty didn't exist. Do we not remember that Swatch raid for selling rainbow-coloured bands earlier in the year? Hell, do we not remember how Anwar was removed from power and thrown in jail twice for most-likely-fabricated sodomy allegations?

Right! The western-centric mindset is just so ignorant :deadbanana4: Like if there's any situation they can learn, just look at Thailand. A country that is tolerable to LGBTQ+ community, yet cannot even pass a law to legalize them. 14 million votes for a new prime minister recently, but somehow the government managed to strip and prosecute him in the House speaker hall for something unreasonable. There's literally corruption, blockage, and monopoly in the South East Asian political landscape.

Sadly our political environment is based on choosing the lesser devil, not the best one. PH is not perfect for sure but I would choose them over PN anydays, the extremism is too much. Mujahid offered some good initiatives to help queer community in the country but he get roasted by the opposition which lead to the gov downfall in 2020.

The band got banned, and if more punitive measures were to be put in place for that cornball's "" crime "", they could've fined the band as well. Cancelling it for everyone is a laughable overreaction.

Please I also live in the region... I know we have to work around, and even with, corruption and authoritarianism etc. but it doesn't mean we have to agree with them in principle or co-opt our principles

It's obvious the homophobia in that country extends beyond the government and the laws.

It's dreadful that Matty's actions might worsen the political situation for LGBTQ+ people in Malaysia.

But the festival shouldn't have invited 1975 in the first place. He has been kissing his band mate at most of his concerts this tour. He also tried to get himself banned from  Dubai in a similar incident.

I do think he meant well but Westerners are often not appreciative of other country's political realities.

I support the government with this decision. They had no choice. The conservative homophobic party and their supporters are going to use this issue and manipulate this whole thing to their benefit and the state election is coming. And if that party win, it’s over for the gheyz  :deadbanana4:. The fact that you had to pick the lesser evil between these two political parties :chick3:

I really wanted to see Lee Hi and sing along ‘Only’ with her but thanks to that straight racist white man. I need Rina to drag him again.

Was he being dragged for being homophobic, or was he being dragged for being racist and misogynistic?

I just want so say, that if Madonna or Lady Gaga would kiss a girl in Malaysia with the same outcome as Matty‘s, the gays here would cheer and NOT side with a homophobic medieval government but here we are.

Nah, people will react the same. If those artists are genuine to help queer community here, they should live and join the local activists to educate not a few seconds of performative activism which expose the community to greater harm then leave them to deal with the aftermath. You guys are lucky to deal with more tolerate gov instead of more draconian one who don't hesitate to put you in jail or even execute you, it's totally different situation.

Agreed 100%. Only the LGBTQ community living in the country would understand how difficult this situation is for themselves. We don't like what the govt is doing but this current govt party is considered the more liberal one as compared to the opposition who tried to ban Coldplay because they raised a rainbow flag in their concert, or Blackpink for even coming to the country at all because 'entertainment isn't the majority-Muslim Malaysia's culture and would do anything to topple the current govt so they can employ their backward regime onto everyone.

Matty is doing more harm than good for us. I understand his POV a hundred percent because it's not ok for the govt to bully the minority community but man, educating the people and the govt about basic human rights in a developing country is not the same as how the first world countries do it.

People came to the festival to have fun and enjoy the music, no one is there to see Matty kiss other guys for “activism”. He ruined it for the citizens and literally nothing will change for the LGBT+ scene there. Stop acting like the government needs celebs to tell them what to do and Matty needs to respect the country that paid him to perform there, if you have issues you could’ve easily issued a statement and rejected their offer. But going there, taking their money and disrespecting them is way too stupid and rude.

it’s not always about being “shocking” and provocative, you guys have to understand that some people just want to have and not go to concerts for statements and politics. get out of your bubbles and see the real world not the stan ATRL world
