The 1975 should've saved that for their own concert :biblio: Now everyone cannot watch all the remaining artists in the lineup

So selfish of the 1975 now the other local musicians who need these gigs will lose money or the opportunity to play for a big crowd just because some British rich guy wanted to be an edge lord

Pathetic of the festival/government to cancel this and pathetic of the members in here coming for Matty instead of the Malaysian government. :ace:

THANK YOU! I know Matty is gross but let's put that energy towards the backwards laws instead.

Um... Matty is giving White Savior Complex. His perception of the country is skewed, as he goes on stage and takes a stand to "save" Malaysians when nobody asked him to do so. While it's indeed horrible how some communities are treated, it's important for activism to be led by those who are in Malaysia and truly understand the complexities of the political and social landscape. The problem is that Matty fails to realize that his actions are more about making himself feel better than actually helping the people in Malaysia. His words may even have negative consequences. In fact, it could further demonize certain groups and provide ultra-conservative politicians with ammunition to restrict concerts and ostracize members of the LGBTQ community. This makes life harder for those who actually live in Malaysia, while Matty gets to jet off to his home country, leaving Malaysians to deal with the aftermath. ESPECIALLY in the entertainment landscape. Due to his actions, expect the government to raid entertainment events and gatherings.

You clearly do not understand the political landscape. Do you think a lot of Malaysians are siding with their government? No one is. People KNOW and there are activists in Malaysia who are doing the work. Matty putting it on loudspeaker, doesn't help anyone. A lot of LGBTQ+ community in Malaysia are even scared to go out to gatherings now because the government is keeping eyes close because of what Matty did.

I HAVE TO LAUGH. I'm originally from China where we have NO basic human rights, let alone gathering. Do I not understand this?

If you are scared to go outside because of Matty Healy and even got angry at him, go **** yourselves, truly.

And you blame this on Matty Healy instead of the government? :rip: no hate but if you fall for this scapegoating bullshit this easily I fear for the activism that you're involved in.

Obligatory disclaimer that I do not care for Matty at all.

People have been blaming the government after all this time... Like? Do you think Malaysians are not pissed with the government? There are literally protests in 2022. No one is saying people do not blame the government:rip:

Was Matty's political rant on stage in Malaysia necessary? NO. Was it needed? NO.

I identify as WEST Korean (China) defector, now what?

The way you guys keep directing hate to the ~white savior~ Matty Healy here is truly HOPELESS. You are almost as tragic as the government, report me!

Even if it wasn't necessary, that doesn't mean he's to blame for the government acting homophobically in response. Any government that respects LGBT folks would not cancel a festival over something as benign as two men kissing on stage, and thus the response we see is a symptom of the government's own shitty beliefs :rip:

The title of this thread should be "...because of the Malaysian government's thin skin."

for what? for telling something that Malaysians already know for years:ahh: like damn, people just want to have a good time and listen to music. And here a white man, pointing out trauma as if people do not know. It's dumb.

Your opinions hold no value then :heart2: I suggest befriending a Malaysian, and understanding the political situation and corruption that has been going on within the government and how people are fighting through protests. :heart2:
