I don’t think the Dua song will be eligible; I thought I read somewhere that the song had already kind of existed before Mark reached out to Dua to record it. To be eligible the song has to be written exclusively for the movie.

Well, let's celebrate to that!

That is very much incorrect.

Oscar Original Song rule:
An original song consists of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the motion picture. There must be a clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition (not necessarily visually presented) of both lyric and melody, used in the body of the motion picture or as the first music cue in the end credits. The work must be the result of a creative interaction between the filmmaker(s) and the composer(s) and/or songwriter(s) who have been engaged to work directly on the motion picture.

About Dance The Night:
The first song to come together was Lipa’s “Dance the Night,” which is performed in the movie and serves as a tentpole musical moment. Gerwig had sent Ronson a disco-inspired playlist that included the Bee Gees, leading Ronson, who lined his New York studio shelves with Barbie and Ken dolls, to come up with “Dance the Night,” co-written with Andrew Wyatt, Caroline Ailin and Lipa.

Coming up with the instrumental that became “Dance the Night,” I felt pretty free to create. I wasn’t thinking, This has got to be the summer smash. It was like, I’m really inspired by this film. I wanted to give them something that’s got disco, but has an unexpected slightly harder edge to it. Greta had referenced the Bee Gees a bit. The thing about the Bee Gees that’s really sneaky: A lot of great pop music, when you listen to it, it’s not as syrupy and slick as you think. When you listen to “Staying Alive,” there’s this big-ass kick drum just going, [imitates drumbeat]. I tried about three or four things and then I finally had this one that I liked and I sent it to her. I think I named it “Tastes Like Barbie,” because I just thought it sounded cool. I didn’t think the whole project hung in the balance — if she didn’t like that track, I was out — but I just wanted her to like it so badly. And she wrote back, “Oh my God, I’ve listened to this 100 times already on the way to the set. My driver says it’s a hit.” This is just the most basic instrumental ever. So they started to do all these dance rehearsals to it. And, listen, it’s not my first time ever at the rodeo, but to walk in and see a piece of music I made on a film set of that level of people rehearsing, and Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling and **** doing choreo, it was kind of rad.

I want to correct this, because we didn’t write it for Dua — we wrote the music and then she wrote the song with Caroline Ailin. I’ve worked with Dua, but I’m also a fan of Dua’s records; I’m a DJ, so I play Dua records. It’s all mixed up in the soup. So I’m sure there’s somewhere where Dua and I have similar influences. I think that it felt Future Nostalgia–adjacent because her music does the **** that I really love, as far as dance music goes: It has an energy, but it’s kind of tough and weird. Same as Tame Impala’s music, like any dance music that’s just a little imposing.

TLDR: The basic melody was written for the movie as a pitch to Greta, they took the instrumental to rehearsals and developed the music further, the song was offered to Dua and then she took part in writing the actual lyrics of it. The song existed before Mark reached out to Dua because the melody was already written for the movie. It is very much eligible because that is how most of the Original Song nominees come together during production

This is valid for Billie as well and What Was I Made For? will very much be their Original Song frontrunner for the Oscars. I don't think they will be sending Dance The Night.

I stand corrected!

I do think they should (and probably will) submit What Was I Made For; she's a former winner and it's very integral to the movie. I suppose there's a world where both could be nominated but I think Dance the Night would need to become a bigger hit/the barrier of entry would be harder

Yeah I agree that What Was I Made For? should be the frontrunner, the only other options I see is I'm Just Ken and Dance The Night. There is a precedent for more than one song being nominated for a movie. One thing that benefits the soundtrack songs from Barbie is that this year is tragically empty of potential nominees. A standard Diane Warren song will probably get in and something from Wonka, there will be Peaches as well from Mario but outside of that there is nothing else.

It will be either What Was I Made For? or Peaches as the winner, leaning on Billie though since it is a more serious entry.

If Just Ken continue to rise ,I could see that as contender

Otherwise Billie is winning

I’m glad this is becoming a hit from the movie. I think Happier than Ever, TV, and now WWIMF will put her back in good graces musically to have another hyped era. Her concept just needs to be a good fit and she can’t release more than 1-2 pre-album singles

Haven't played this song much since release (to be fair it's a song for a certain mood), but I'm glad it is doing well. Love how the vintage blonde aesthetic from HTE fits so well for it. I was low key obsessed with that era aesthetics and I know it was a big departure for her so it was not gonna please everyone. But as the saying goes, time is the ultimate truth teller. :gayriahcat2:

It's amazing the autoplay started now. I hope this helps the song to stabilize in the next few weeks, it deserves it. :foxaylove:

Doesn't autoplay start on Thursdays? FAKE NEWS

The song also jumped 10-15 spots in the past day on Apple Music. it's organic boo!

Was not expecting this rise but if this manages to go Top 20 (or even Top 10 if the rise or stability continues) :soda:

Another classic soundtrack single in the making.

at this point nobody knows how autoplay works because even some songs start autoplaying 2 days after release. Considering the release of the album and that this is her best week to have a cute peak...
