I read that they only made this to legally maintain their option to make more LOTR movies (that no one asked for) with Peter Jackson. So maybe they don’t care that much, it’s like a loss leader.

How is Disney saying Mufasa was "#1 movie in the world" marketing manipulation?

 

Mufasa was the highest grossing movie in the world that weekend and that's a fact. Any studio would have made the same statement.
 

Sony is the one who strategically delayed the international release of Sonic to avoid competing with Mufasa.
