Abracadabra Posted July 22, 2023 Posted July 22, 2023 Haven't seen either movies yet but it's so refreshing to see two movies, neither of which being superhero franchise movies, both having huge opening weekends at the box office. Feels like that happens so rarely these days 6

dumbsparce Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 I can't wait to watch Barbie. I assume it's all allegory and full of deep messages so my only concern is whether they managed to pull that off without the cringe and cheese of the typical Hollywood production.

Hmm maybe (at least it's something new kinda ) but they also must be taking note of the fact that both movies are doing very well, not just Barbie. There's still an appetite for people to go out to the theatres to see movies. If anything I can see this release motivating Hollywood to release more big movies on the same weekend, as it seems that the competition has benefited them both.

You are not wrong about the message but I believe they nailed it. The perfect balance. A truly incredible movie.
simon Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 (edited) Great movie! Seeing the Mattel opening makes me wonder if they are going to try to compete with Marvel, DC Comics, etc. They have 60+ year of legacy to pull from, and I can see a massive box office universe with several films - especially after the this weekend’s opening. BNF91 Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Early Saturday estimates looking lower than expected, $48M. Still great but it is clear that there was some frontloadedness on Thurs/Fri. $150M is locked but not sure how much more than that. Still brilliant.

Margot must be really proud of herself. The 300M figure is combined domestic BO for all the movies in theatres this weekend, not Barbie only.

Aethereal Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 China is increasing. $7M-8M opening weekend. Korea is dumping this movie nearly as much as TLM. 1

Dark Miracles Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 That's huge for Nolan. Obviously it benefited from the Barbenheimer hype but it's still massive numbers for a historical biopic.
