Gorjesspazze9 Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 This Summer box office is way different than I was expecting. Mario may really be the biggest film of the year😆
wish Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 Everyone is FINALLY sick of these same old overdone blockbuster franchises 1
Gossip_Boy Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 (edited) This might end up being a bigger flop even than The Flash given the budget. This summer so far has been an actual bloodbath Edited June 27, 2023 by Gossip_Boy
Price of Fame Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 Releasing 200 million dollars+ movies every other week and expecting them all to make a billion dollars isn't a sustainable business model 4 1

ATRL Moderator Ampersand13 Posted June 27, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted June 27, 2023 I would call Little Mermaid and Fast X underperformances not pure flops but I guess considering they both could have been billion dollar pictures I understand their inclusion I don't mind franchises and sequels so long as the people creating them tell the stories in a compelling fashion. It is possible to have fulfilling remakes, sequels, and franchises, I just hope Hollywood realizes they can't keep relying on name recognition and IP alone. I think this is where Barbie will become a gold standard of sorts (hopefully.) Taking a beloved property and using it in a creative way and even adding satire/social critique. The other thing to consider is that Mario did just make over a billion dollars with a rather insipid plot (still enjoyed it though.) So I guess this might have to do more with overcrowding and premium screens than audiences truly being 'over' franchises and whatnot. 9
Dom Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 Thank god box office elixir Margot Robbie is slaying with her arthouse hit Asteroid City and upcoming Barbie. a so called box office poison slaying the summer. We love to see it. 5 1

But better budget management is definitely needed moving forward.

Europe Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 I mean, not one of the movies in the OP is good. So it makes sense they are flopping. At least Mario did something fresh and look, that was a success. 1 1

Didn't realize that. I was going off of reported budget next to WW gross and thought Fast and Mermaid were at least breaking even (still disastrous obviously)
ninasayers Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 It's kinda funny to see some of you say audiences are tired of regurgitated trash content when the Mario movie is the most successful film of the year. 3 2 1
Mr. Blue_Shirt Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 2023 is the year of flop summer blockbuster films Spiderverse really dogwalking these movies like that ddd

People say it’s a flop because it didn’t gross 1B which is very unrealistic. Not to mention it will be a huge on Disney+ 4 3
Daddy Posted June 27, 2023 Posted June 27, 2023 I will watch it twice. First with a friend and later with my dad when he's in town.
