Palestinian leader approves of Uyghur “re-education” camps

BEIJING -- Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas wrapped up a trip to China Friday after seeking economic aid and voicing support for Beijing’s repressive policies toward Muslim minorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

During his four-day visit, Abbas met with Chinese President and head of the ruling Communist Party Xi Jinping. The leaders then issued a joint statement endorsing Beijing’s domestic and foreign policies and repudiating Western concepts of human rights.

In the statement, the Palestinian Authority said issues regarding China's policy toward Muslims in Xinjiang have "nothing to do with human rights and are aimed at excising extremism and opposing terrorism and separatism.”

“Palestine resolutely opposes using the Xinjiang problem as a way of interfering in China's internal affairs,” the joint statement said.

That echoes Chinese propaganda surrounding the detention of more than 1 million Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minorities in prison-like detention centers on little or no legal grounds — often merely for having a relative studying abroad or downloading the Koran onto their phones.

China says the widely-documented complex of heavily-guarded centers were intended to instill patriotism, purge radicalism spread over the internet and provide vocational training — and have now been shut down. Critics say many have been turned into prisons.

:omg:

This must be why there are now so many articles in US media about Palestine and China in the last few days.

China's biggest flaw has been its fence sitting so to see it finally come to Palestine's defense is going to have ramifications far and wide.

Given the investment of the American government in the apartheid of the Palestinian people by the Israeli occupation, I imagine a coordinated anti-Palestine, anti-China media blitz is coming.

Add Russia to China and Palestine’s team, considering last year Abbas said he saw nothing wrong with Russia’s view of justice. I feel bad for Palestinians having leadership like this… he never not misses a chance to squander their goals for an independent state :skull:

Me too, since they are not mandatory unless crimes have been commited. Definitely way better than the racism xenophobia in prison and the prison complex in general in the US.

Disgusting and Israel is still committing war crimes in Palestine.

It's so interesting how a rightwing regime can call a spade a spade in another country but not in their own. It's amazing the wonders the human brain can make rationalization for.

Palestinian leader is serving Florida rep tbh.

I imagine the Western land grab done in Palesrine to create Israel and other Western-fronted attempts to balkanize the Middle East makes them sympathetic to China similarly having to deal with attempts by foreign nations to balkanize it.

That people view Palestine as a breakaway state trying to separate from Israel - as opposed to its history as an occupied nation eventually taken over by a separatist movement allowed to exist by a powerful foreign enemy - and expect it to be sympathetic to the US and its goals is probably why positive sentiment to the West is so low in Palestine. Even when seeking to control Palestine, those in the West lack the empathy to understand its people.

The enemy of my enemy is my friend, this is geopolitics at play. China playing its cards right while the West continues to deteriorate.

No surprise that Palestine was going to find someone to align with eventually. It needs some sort of international support in order to gain some power in an effort for independence. Objectively, this is smart for him to pursue since obviously the US/West is no help. China and Russia could be, even if their reasoning is nefarious.

That said, this will be very dangerous for the future of sovereign nations that were once apart of a greater empire (Eastern European countries, Taiwan, etc.). I also don't know if a shift in alliances like this will lead to a new threat of war. Maybe if Israel wasn't continuing its illegality and established trust with Palestinian leadership for some peace, this could have all been avoided.

It's worth noting that the hard shift to right in Israel (and aggressive settlement polices enacted by the right-wing government) are largely in reaction to Palestinian leadership rejecting the numerous peace deals Israel has offered over the course of its existence as a state. Israel completely disengaged from Gaza in 2005, and citizens promptly elected internationally recognized terror group Hamas into power, and the right wing was able to exert control over the narrative.

In principle, I agree with you. But it will take more than just Israel stopping its aggressive expansion into the West Bank for this conflict to have a real resolution.
