Retail Stores Leaving San Francisco Due to Looting and Crime

Westfield Mall in San Francisco is the latest retail store closing due to out of control crime and shoplifting.

The mall operator said that foot-fall and shoppers using the mall was significantly down and numerous retailers had abandoned the mall after lack of action against theft and crime.

Downtown SF has seen a stunning crime wave in recent years with shootings, stabbing, muggings, violent crime and drug use being rampant.

The announcement comes just weeks after Nordstrom announced it was leaving the city.

Other retailers that have left San Francisco include H&M, Hilton, Saks Off 5th, Gap, Whole Foods and Banana Republic.

Sounds like even more reason to end homelessness by housing the unhoused.

My cousin pays over $2500 per month for a 450 sq ft loft there so you can imagine why people are struggling to provide for their families.

Not surprised, I left SF in 2019 after 4 years and it was a complete dump then. Can't imagine how much worse it's gotten after the pandemic

Ready for all the suggestions on reform from non-California residents who haven't had to deal with this first hand :eatpopcorn:

Imagine that... when the cost of living is insanely high.

People are going to do whatever it takes to survive. :michael:

I’m not surprised tbh. SF has changed for the worst over the years. I feel bad for the small business owners that have to deal with looting and crime.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been to SF recently.

Looks like we are going to have food deserts in the middle of SF in future... I hope they strengthen their police more unlike their previous DA

They’re taking stuff that isn’t going to help them survive. They’re just looting because they can. It’s not like they’re stealing bread because they’re starving. They’re taking makeup, handbags, etc. They’re also not homeless. They’re kids  laughing and having a great time doing it. Making excuses is why it’s happening in the first place. It’s reckless. Lawlessness is turning these places third world. Letting them get away with crime is a gateway to producing even worse criminals who will graduate into committing even worse crimes like rape and murder. People feel like they can get away with anything. We’re breeding a generation of criminals. There needs to be law and order in order to live in a civilized society. Looking the other way while people commit crime is only going to lead to things like food deserts. Nothing good comes from it. The fact that people can’t understand the concept of right from wrong is astounding. Most of our parents explained that stealing was wrong before we were even two years old. People saying “Who cares, they have insurance,” are nuts. They think that money grows on trees, that the world owes them something, and that there will be no repercussions. They’re sociopathic. They wouldn’t like someone going into their homes and taking whatever they wanted.

I just know no practical and implementable solutions will come from the left.

You mean luxury goods that can then be sold for money?

The city has made it illegal to build housing forcing everyone to fight over the scraps to survive.  I'm sure the wealthy property owners would be happy to see the city burn before they dare let more housing exist.

I've heard that if it has "San" in front of it you should stay away

The cops need to start rounding people up.

NIMBYs have ruined San Francisco and prevented any sort of affordable housing from being built. It's disgusting.

This has nothing to do with housing. Housing is expensive in Austin as well. Why don't I hear similar stories from there?

The two are not remotely comparable - I have family and friends that live in both cities. I know.

Define expensive.

Either way, there's a reason why it's more prevalent here. It's because of the lax laws and emboldened criminals.

To say this has nothing to do with cost of living is ridiculous. :rip: Why do you think people steal?

They steal because they can. If they steal in a red state like this, they'll be shot dead.

Same thing happening in Chicago as well... If people still don't acknowledge that tougher actions need to be taken to prevent theft, you'll never ever be able to tackle this. It's quite sad because law abiding citizens are caught in the crossfire.
