Cruel Summer Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 I get that the price tag is shocking, but remember that "Pro" is in the name. They'll make a cheaper version sooner or later that isn't "pro" and that's targeted at more typical consumers. Apple is still a luxury brand, or at least tries to be one, and this is a new product that professionals and developers will explore first, plus influences and corporations. I understand the concerns with it feeling like Black Mirror or whatever. It's a little hard to think of this solitary experience as not being isolating. But this creeps me out way less than most AI applications - this isn't an insidious device, it's just a little odd. I don't know if I can justify dropping this much on a first-generation device, but I'd like to try it out. 1
enchanted0 Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 I think it will be an another hit for Apple. I mean it's expensive but surprisingly I'm seeing lots of reactions like "take my money" "let me save my money until the next year"
thetea Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 that looks interesting but not something that i'd buy in the foreseeable future. that would be $5800 in my local currency which I could never justify. there's currently no practical uses for virtual reality headsets for me but maybe there is for others?
Noodles Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Idk why people are shocked or thinking this is stupid. It has been inevitable that wearable tech is where these tech companies are heading towards. Smartphone innovations have been stalling for a while, and tbh they HAVE been dragging out the smartphone releases because there was still money to milk. This is not going to be the next big thing the way iPhone was immediately, nor will it be the direct replacement. Just give it a few generations though, I'm interested to see how this will develop. I remember when everyone was shitting on the Airpods or Apple Watch when they were announced and now I can't see nobody not wearing them
1DES Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 I can't with apple being serious about this being an alternative to a big screen with surround sound system.

If it flops, AR will be seen as a niche and more companies will get out the market entirely. One big con for me is the design, its so tacky and I'm firm on the belief that no one will be brave enough to take this big ass headwear to the mainstream. Its clunky and big, sleek and stylish has always been the definitive branding for Apple so idk why they went with this.
Delirious Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Can't wait for people to say they're poor and then 2 seconds later they buy this
Vespertine Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Can’t wait to attend the TS11 tour with this! It’ll be cheaper than resale tickets
barbiegrande Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Their first new device in 10 years? The watch? The flop speaker? Indont see what’s so special about this VR set that the others on the market don’t already have

I’m not sure how it would look more slick? To have this type of hardware, it has to be pretty hefty to store all the necessary sensors and compute resources.
Starshine Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 This is a device you buy in 5 years when they work out the kinks and it becomes more accessible in price with the non-Pro model. Compare the first iPhone to the iPhone 4/5, it’s wildly different. The only way it will take over the iPhone in sales is when the can shrink the tech over time to sunglasses form. For now, developers will be racing to buy it to get a head start on apps. It’s a gold mine there. 1
tost1 Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Imagine wearing this with that big cable hanging from your head too nobody wants this kind of future.
sweetblindness Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 The tech in this is jaw-dropping, and watching the presentation I knew it wouldn't cost less than $3k (2x 4k displays, 12 cameras and various sensors, M1/R1 chips, retina scanners, front display, spatial audio, etc). However, it is marketed as the Vision Pro, so there will probably be a cheaper, mass-market version of this in 2-3 years (for reference, the iPhone 3G, which followed the original iPhone, was half the price of the first generation and came with a host of new features). It's a first generation device, so this initial run is more aimed at developers and tech enthusiasts who will build out the Vision App Store and build anticipation for the second (more affordable?) generation. The device has both intriguing and incredibly terrifying implications, though. Watching the ad got me excited but it also felt alarmingly dystopian. Regardless, a lot of the people writing it off might look like the original iPhone doubters in a few years (or they could be totally right and this may not be adopted at all). I do think it could be everything it's hyped up to be, though. Probably not right off the bat, but I do think as AR/MR/VR technology is developed, it could mark a shift away from standard monitors/televisions/even phones, if the wearable tech is made smaller and more comfortable, the uses for it are expanded upon, and it becomes truly wireless, with a battery life better than 2 hours. There are limitless opportunities for this device...imagine just one camera in the front row at the Eras tour. You could sell an unlimited amount of tickets. It already looks like the best implementation of MR, and by a landslide. I'm sure there's a lot of people asking "Why would anyone need this?", and while I don't plan on buying one anytime soon, I'm still super excited over it, and let's not forget there were a lot of people asking the exact same question about the iPhone when everyone already owned a Blackberry in the 2000's... I can't wait to see what this device looks like and what it can do in another decade, and I hope it's more beneficial than dystopian. This will be historic, whether it's a flop or smash hit. 4 1
Archetype Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 Looks amazing. FYI this is branded as “Pro”, meaning a much more accessibly priced Vision will be announced in the future. Regardless, the display technology will be the most advanced mass produced screen on earth. Apple is sort of on another level with their tech at this point, I can’t wait to see what this is like in a few years. 2

As depression and anxiety rates skyrocket directly related to technology/social media/less real interaction, why are we still on this stupid, artificial path? We are NOT biologically wired for this. We are supposed to look into eachother's eyes and facial expressions. Our brains haven't even changed in 40,000 years ffs. Who makes money off of regular old fashioned eye contact?

Indont see what’s so special about this VR set that the others on the market don’t already have The tech in this is miles above a Meta Quest Pro and HoloLens. More akin to the latter in price. -4k+ resolution per eye, micro OLED displays. 5000 nits (before the lens). Some reporters were demoed Avatar 2 and said it was the most immersive cinematic experience. -12 cameras and more sensors enabling much better passthrough for reading/seeing in the real world. It should feel seamless. -Precise hand tracking and no other input needed, Meta has tried this and they couldn’t refine it to this level so controllers are needed. One reporter was able to rest his arm on his lap and flick his fingers/wrist and it was able to detect that, that is as revolutionary as multitouch for the first iPhone. -3D scanning for holographic FaceTime calls that have a realistic avatars of yourself rather than a cartoon -Spatial audio with ray tracing embedded, basically Nvidia’s tech -Exterior display, the eyesight looks so goofy but at least the people around you are aware whether you’re busy or not? I don’t know what they were thinking with this one, but VR in nature is extremely isolating. Most importantly imo -Weight and comfort, rumored to be ~300-400 grams… about half of the competition’s. Most people can’t use headsets for longer than 2 hours. People will clown the battery pack, but I think that’s the best choice for comfort. -The other most important thing, software. It will be leaps ahead in everything besides gaming. Other headsets feel like you’re using 3rd party beta software and is far from refined. And I’m sure 3rd party developers will prioritize this platform, as they already do with iOS. I have many gripes with this product, it will likely be a flop due to the price and eventually viable for mass market with Apple Vision (non-Pro) in 2026. And socially accepted when the size is smaller. For now, it’s comparable to the Mac in the 80s. Edited June 6, 2023 by Starshine 1
Dula Peep Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 I can’t wait to browse ATRL, while watching porn, while texting, while sitting in an immersive giant lake in the wilderness.

Put it to the backburner of Apple ideas until the tech is available to make it more sleek, the Google Glass prototype was where they should've headed imo. --- Could buy it but honestly idk who the target demo for this is.

Gorjesspazze9 Posted June 6, 2023 Posted June 6, 2023 (edited) The Scrolling and navigation with just moving your eyes is kinda crazy tho🤯 like imagine if they move that feature into an IPhone ‼️ No more Scrolling with your thumbs?! Looks like a Sci-fi movie. The future is here Edited June 6, 2023 by Gorjesspazze9 1
