What Can The Left Do To Combat Rising Homophobia + Transphobia?

Everyone seems to be in agreement that the right is becoming more brazen in their bigotry towards the LGBT community. How can the left fight this? Is there anything you think could help put a stop to this rising tide?

Take a self defense class, keep mace on you at all times, and even carry if you can/feel comfortable doing so. I don't like feeling like any of that is needed, but I think it's best to be prepared to defend yourself against these terrorists if necessary. Most of the population of the countries seeing this rise in terrorism against our community supports marriage equality and trans rights, so I think it's less about changing people's minds and more about keeping yourself safe against the violent minority we're having to deal with.

Disclaimer: Unlike these right-wing terrorists, I am not encouraging acts of violence when telling queer people to learn about self defense.

Be more assertive and aggressive, tbh I’m not living for this growing discrimination towards us, i know how to fight, but I don’t own any guns or anything like that so I can’t do much if some psycho has firearms. Maybe we the Queer people should definitely start to fight back in different ways, left is pretty passive so we could do more about casual discrimination and call out people being transphobic or homophobic.

stand firm in your support of these communities in your spaces and promote a culture of acceptance.  I have no power do to much about Uganda, Saudi Arabia, or Florida, but I have a voice in my workplace, social sphere, and home.

Defend yourselves physically and verbally.

call it out on social media, instead of passively avoiding it to not offend our parents, relatives, or conservative friends who may be watching.

It is important to understand that despite how vocal these bigots are online, they are in the minority. The vast majority of people in the US do not care if you are LGBTQ and believe that people should be left alone. For that reason, we should simply ignore them.

This sounds cheesy, but vote. If good people are in positions of power, the power these bigots possess is diminished. If good people are in positions of power, all these bigots have is Twitter to cry and whine.

Reaffirm that trans women are women and that trans men are men; stand firm in the spaces and language queer people have already carved and normalized like the mainstreaming of drag or the usage of the word "cis"; continue the long-held belief that LGBTQ people are "born this way" to continue the normalization of being queer, and frame a rejection of normalizing queerness as a rejection of people's personhood in itself.

To stop being goaded by and falling for reactionary far-right talking points removed from any class consciousness.

To remember that the material reality of LGB people is inherently connected to the material reality of trans people.

This is a big part of it. Bigots only have power when we give it to them. If we ignored them, they will just have to yell into the void.

All of this but especially this.

OT: Advocating for trans people to have access to comprehensive care at all ages should come far before we die on the hill so that the local diner can have drag brunch on Sunday morning. Obviously we should be able to have both, but the urgency and conviction the for which the former must be prioritized cannot be understated given the direct impact it has on the livelihoods of trans and GNC individuals.

DO NOT CEDE GROUND TO BIGOTS.

For the love of god, idk what it is with modern day gay men but people who want us 6-feet under will not be satisfied if we "behave" ourselves. Our existence itself is unruly to them, every breath we take offends them, they want us gone! This is not a difference of opinion, stop treating it like it is, if you don't support your community now, start doing so. Socialize, attend an event someone is having. Get to know the people you live around. Have an impact on lives.

War is won in people's hearts, unironically. Gay people had to socialize to change the tide of hate that we used to have, community activity and getting together with fellow members of your local lgbt groups helps yourself and others. Just numbers is good enough.
