vale9001 Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Quentin Tarantino questions “what even is a motion picture anymore?” “Not picking on anybody but apparently for Netflix, Ryan Reynolds has made $50M on this movie, $50M on that movie, $50M on the next movie. I don't know what any of those movies are. Never seen them. Have you?" “I haven’t ever talked to Ryan Reynolds’ agent, but his agent is like, ‘Well, it cost $50 million.’ Well, good for him that he’s making so much money. But those movies don’t exist in the zeitgeist. It’s almost like they don’t even exist.” https://deadline.com/2023/05/quentin-tarantino-retirement-james-bond-tv-cannes-1235379761/
ATRL Moderator feelslikeadream Posted May 26, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted May 26, 2023 I also didn't realize Ryan Reynolds made several movies on Netflix. I think he has a point that many streaming movies fail to capture wide GP attention the way a theatrical release would. There are exceptions, of course, but streaming has definitely led to oversaturation.

I think movies to exist need the big screen, then the home video, then television, then again the big screen for a new edition or an anniversary, then a new home video edition etc.. this is how a movie became part of the culture in the years. It's not a quality issue what he's talking about imo. I mean Rome, The irishmen...They were like 10+ oscars nominated movies and I really forgot they exists cause they are lost in the netflix algorithm. While you always feel The goodfellas is in the culture cause every 3 months is in some tv channel, you hear about a new edition coming to the screen etc.. even if you don't watch them you remember a movie exists,. Stepfon Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 People are going to call him a hater. But he is 100% right. 2
vale9001 Posted May 26, 2023 Author Posted May 26, 2023 (edited) i mean who remembers Coda exists? Apple tv 18 users?. It will never be on home video, cable tv, free television or on the big screen again etc.. if you don't have apple tv it doesn't exist anymore. It's a fact. Edited May 26, 2023 by vale9001
305 Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 He's so right, these actors getting paid ridiculous amounts for a non-event streaming movie is getting tired
Lactose_Milk Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 He’s right. After a day of watching a movie on streaming y’all will forget about it after a week and it won’t be brought up to discussion ever again lol. There’s so much disposable filler that they end up fading away on the platform.
Miss Fortune Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 I get his point. Movies and TV have become so dime-a-dozen that they fade into the ether. Films don't gain status like they did once upon a time. You don't get blockbuster films like Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction etc now. It's a rarity for a film to be made for the art of film making, instead of the need to keep up subscriber numbers. The goal is different and the art has suffered. Movies are pumped out at record speed with the desperate hope that one hits.
truthteller Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 (edited) when the streaming bubble bursts it's gonna be the end of them (and for those film snobs, dont you forget straight to video films also exist in the past decades) Edited May 26, 2023 by truthteller
Josh Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Streaming movies are the equivalent of the "5 dollar bin" at Walmart
Venice B Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 For some reason he's giving me this same energy and I'm living
enchanted0 Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 He has a point but some people watch movies just to spend their time and those Netflix filler movies do their job perfectly so... not everyone can afford to absorb themselves to the movie and "appreciate" it these days

Also they still had a television circuit etc. If a movie Is only on Netflix (so you can't buy a DVD, you can't rent It, you can't watch It on television) if you don't have Netflix It doesn't exist. That or virality - but that may only apply to low culture films like Bird Box (not to say that Bird Box is part of the culture necessarily) Edited May 26, 2023 by Rotunda
Into The Void Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 He made like 3 Netflix movie and he seems bitter lol
Happylittlepunk Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 He didn’t lie. These Netflix and pure streaming movies are basically a new generation version of straight to video/dvd movies.
