Heading into Manhattan for a big event is not always preferred let alone convenient for a lot of people in attendance. Plus the VMA’s just don’t have that NYC kinda budget anymore. And no, I don't buy the argument I've seen here that it's a form of promotion for "those that need it". NO, only those invited that don't need it, and for a ceremony that no one watches for trophies that hold no cultural cache any longer. The only traction is for a live performance that can go viral and there's plenty of other outlets for that with much better chances of wider audiences.
