Martin Scorsese debuts a masterpiece in Cannes

They' re calling it one of his best movies.

According to most is Leonardo di Caprio best performance ever so he became a serious contender for his second oscar.

The movie is described as a macabre epic western about greedy and evil whites against natives.

Probably It will be really hard to find a stronger contender this year to almost every Oscar including best picture and director.

If it stays above 90 on metacritic after most reviews are in then yeah it's game over for everyone for the next awards season

doubtful. esp for a 200+ minute film. and the trend of best picture wins NOT going to oscar darlings.

Irishman got raves too.

Variety: "Instead of focusing his cameras on the Native victims, the 'Irishman' director lets Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro have the lion's share of the screen time in this meaty but demanding true-crime saga." It does at least sound more interesting than the book which was centered around the cop played by jesse plemons.

Is this another film where Leo is playing a racist character? Critics love this stuff

It's well know di Caprio, once involved, asked to re write the movie to get the perfect villain role to get his oscar. In the book the character has a minor role and it's not so negative.

Also the female role became more central.

The irish man was easily criticizable to be "old School" and "another Scorsese movie about gangsters".

This seems to have the political themes on Its side.

Probably not. An acting win, maybe.

It's one of Scorsese last movies. They even went to Cannes 6 months before the release. Apple will make a never seen campaign and the Academy will love probably the last peak movie from one of the greatest.

Last 2 years the award for best picture went to a bad forgettable movie and last year to an interesting particular movie. Not strange if next year they could choose a more classic big american movie.

Hopefully Leo's date will be old enough to stay out past curfew on oscar night. :clap3:

Why is daddy scorsese incapable of making movies with a not-insane runtime? :'(

My point was about the content and the style of the movies. After moonlight for example they gave it to a very traditional old style movie like green book.

Isn't it actually more rare that villain roles win an Oscar? I believe it's even been said that it's actually quite difficult to win playing a villain role

She’s getting rave reviews. Even the more mixed reviews from reviewers who didn’t like the film as much are singling her out for praise.

Feel like this and The Color Purple are the early Oscar front-runners

which is a good sign that they'll lose, based on recent years.
