Do you respect your elders because they're your elders or is respect given both ways?

There's that saying "Respect your elders" so my question is do you respect your elders simply because they're your elders or do you give respect when they give it to you like you do with others

i just act fake to everyone

i don’t even get what ppl say when they mean they ‘respect’ someone .. ive always thought it means u look up to them .. why would i look up to someone because they’re old? :rip:

I don’t like old people. Especially all the racist ones.

I try to be nice to everyone regardless, but I don't know if I would call that 'respecting'.

However, if you act disrespectful or unkind then I don't care if you're old or not, I'm not gonna continue being nice.

There's so many old people here that think they can act like **** just because they're old and I'm not about that.

I mean there’s a difference between respecting someone and treating them with respect. I try to do the latter for everyone, but I don’t really respect a person unless I really know and admire them as a person.

i'm polite to everyone.

however, age really is just a number in many ways. some old people are really wise and learned their lessons so talking to them feels like you are talking to someone you could learn from and you can tell that they put a lot of thoughts into their opinions based on their life experience. that said, some old people are just dumb af and never learned anything and are therefore miserable and toxic to be around. it's definitely not true that you automatically gain wisdom with age

Most people over the age of 30, especially online, are rude AF. That's why Facebook is so toxic now.

I've met some great older people in person at work on the other hand.

So it depends on the person

You respect elders because one day your body will fail you too and you’ll need the help of young ppl, God willing!

I treat everyone with decent respect/politeness, HOWEVER I used to always believe in that respect your elders above all else crap until some of the meanest, most entitled & selfish people I ever worked with were the oldest ones :rip: So as far as on a deep human level of respecting who they are as people by default, that went away. I think that generation has a big cultural problem with being extremely selfish and completely dismissive of younger people’s time and energy. In many ways I think this gen of old people are ******* young people over.

No, I don't respect elders simply because they are so. I respect those who are decent people. I'm not going to respect an elder who's discriminatory, racist or otherwise prejudiced or simply just an awful person. Respect is earned; it's definitely not given freely. I'll be cordial, at the very least; but there definitely won't be a blind and misguided respect just because they're an elder.

No, I hate everybody equally until otherwise proven

Respect is earned, I treat everyone equally well until they say something stupid or idiotic

A lot of old people are idiots ngl, but a lot of people our age especially online are equally bad

So is not about age is about the person

I don't like nor respect old people coz it's because of them mostly that as a society we are stuck or regressing in all spheres of life & politics

By default, I respect everyone until I have a reason not to show them respect or respect them.

Hmm it's true that you have to respect your elders, but you have to be respectful to everyone in general really. I avoid entitled old people or bratty kids.
