Aethereal Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 So even though I prefer Disney's 20th century animated movies above anything else but whenever I see modern 2D animated movies or series they lack the magic that in general animated movies of 20th century did. They are so HD, emotionless, it's animation is less heartwarming and the storyline is less appealing. The same can be said about anime. Do you think there is a downgrade?
TheBoss Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 I understand exactly how you feel, The Simpsons is a great example of this too
dussel_06 Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 I still love animated movies especially the ones coming from Japan. Makoto Shinkai is still one hell of a visualizer, all animation types considered. And Your Name is one of if not the most beautiful animated movie ever in terms of visuals. I fell in love recently with a double feature movie To Every You I Love Before and To Me, The One Who Loved You.

But modern Dragon Ball looks objectively crap compared to the original DBZ. I liked the Buu saga animation in DBZ for example. Should've stayed like that with some minor improvements.
DamianSolo Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 I don't like some of the newer animation styles, as a lot of the charm has vanished. While I still am able to enjoy the films, it's really not what it used to be.
shinyshimmery Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 Mmmm, it's probably a nostalgia factor. When I remember movies of my childhood, they are always crystal clear in my head, but if I were to rewatch, they are grainy af lol. I guess animators could use filters on modern animation, but then it would make advancements in animation technology useless.

I don't feel the same about 3D animation. 3D animation is insanely better than 2000s. So I doubt it's just nostalgia.
zasderfght Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 If the movie is good, that's all that matters to me. Idc if a movie looks "too" glossy or high-def. As long as the movie is good. For example, I thought the Bob's Burger movie was pretty good/funny.
