From the same NPR link: Cute accounting trick I'll grant, but they do spell it out well below the fold. As long as they require significant state and federal funding to function, they can't be considered independent from state influence, thus the affiliation tag. Not that it all matters much, as the U.S. government has plenty of alternate means to influence and control nominally fully independent media outlets. Which is why these stupid labels that no one cares about should just be removed all together. Let's do the math, then NPR's average consolidated revenues from changes in net assets without donor restrictions (FY18-FY22) Quote NPR's Member organizations support NPR financially in two ways: A core fee for the NPR newsmagazines (Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Weekend Edition), as well as an array of digital content, tools and platforms, and a suite of services designed to drive audience engagement and support License fees for a portfolio of broadcast programs other than the NPR newsmagazines Public Radio Station Revenues (FY20) Multiply the 31% of NPR's revenue that comes from member stations with the 13% of member stations' revenues (8% + 5%) that comes from governments, and you get 4.03%. Add that to the less than 1% of NPR's revenue that comes directly from the federal government, and NPR gets less than 5.03% of its total revenue from federal, state, and local governments combined. Now, compare that less than 5.03% figure with the fact that RT is 99.5% to 99.9% funded by the Russian government, and you'll see why it's ridiculous to claim that NPR and RT are the same. Pretty solid bet NPR would go as far as to delete the account given they're still figuring out what to do because Elon's so erratic and backed off his original state-media label. https://gizmodo.com/elon-musk-twitter-npr-bbc-rt-xinhua-delete-media-label-1850361523 They're not going back to tweeting, that's clear.

Any Internet platform that intentionally hands your account over to a third party without your consent should be a crime.
