Warners, just like you started a sensation with Barbie, you did again with A Minecraft Movie. We're getting reports of auditoriums full of middle schoolers hooting, hollering and shouting out meme lines from the game. Kids are jumping on top of seats, and dancing in the aisles when Jack Black breaks out in song. A Minecraft Movie mania is real and ticket sales keep building up like bricks, now at $55M for Friday (including last night's $10.55M) with an opening weekend now heading for $130M. Some rivals have it closer to $150M.

Barbie was stylish, peppy and delivered a message about womanhood in a bubblegum-colored bow. It was beyond fun, but was it funny?

 

Not really. I don't recall laughing out loud once. There were also times when it kind of dragged. In Minecraft, I got a fast-paced plot that delivered witty one-liners, hilarious sexual innuendos and, surprise, my favorite Jennifer Coolidge as a randy divorcee who falls for a Minecraft villager. (How did we moms not even know she was in this?!)
