I don't mind Snape being black, but I do think the actor is a bit too goodlooking. Snape is supposed to be quite unattractive, socially akward and basically a loser (as a teenager and an adult). Paapa does not give that energy lol. So I'm curious how he will approach the role.

I'm here for them switching the race, but not when it changes the plot. And this will change the plot. It will make Sirius and James racist, white, poor-bloods bullying black Snape from a poor background. When it is actually Snape who is discriminating the muggleborns and is drawn to the Dark Arts. And Lily ditching her black friend for the racists. It will be a mess.

Why not a black Dumbledore? That would be great.

This and this. There's always been so much discourse around the James/Sirius/Snape dynamics and now with race being involved they will make James and Sirius look even worse. Also the fact Harry has a hate boner for Snape throught the whole series until the plotwist at the end. It will be awful.

At least Paapa looks young. One of the things that always pissed me off about the movies was how they aged James, Lily, Sirius, Lupin and Snape a loooooot. They were barely adults when the first war happened, James and Lily were like what? 21 or 22 when they died? And the movies made them look like old hags :rip:

All of this... This racial blindness in casting is not always a good thing. In this case it will just make things more complicated and messy

What a mess.

atp might as well make Sirius Black, black. Otherwise the Marauders are not beating the racist allegations.

I'm actually very excited for this. Hopefully they choose a Harry who's taller than 5'5" this time

I mean, they can't tell how tall preteens are going to end up being

certainly they couldn't know that neville would be the cute adult

I just hope they cast a very hot duo for Lupin and Sirius and give us the homoerotic content we deserve, **** you JK ******** for being a coward and not making them the couple they clearly were

Like imagine when we find out Harry's dad was the most bland boring basic pimple faced musty white boy ever like how tf would Lily trade that piece of man that is Paapa for that... :weeps:

That's my only problem with Paapa's casting, It's just not realistic. He's too hot to be perceived as an ugly weird underdog.

For the role of Snape, taking into consideration the reports of him being portrayed by a black actor in the series, I was hoping Aaron Pierre would have been selected. It's just all in the eyes for me. They're very alluring. Some people may say that it's not accurate to the book's description of the character, but I've never been one to feel as though the source material—no matter the property or franchise—had to be followed 100% through. Of course some people may disagree, which is fine, but here we are...

casting a black Snape is literally a nail in the coffin for the show

how are they going to explain Harry walking into Hogwarts and having random unexplainable beef with Snape from day 1? it's just going to paint Harry as racist :deadbanana: byeeee this is so braindead

All I can say is that I hope they think very carefully on how to explain snapes memories and also the complicated relationship between snape and Harry. They also need to show how much snape bullied harry, Ron, Hermione and especially neville

Racist!Harry hating Snape on sight is inherited from his racist!father, who once explained his hatred of Snape by saying, and I quote, "It's the fact that he exists." :deadbanana:

Some of you really need to chill. Snape's race isn't nearly as big of a deal as some people are making it out to be. In fact, it's pretty irrelevant to the story. If anything, the bigger issue is that he's not as unattractive as he's described in the books—but even that isn't crucial.

Now, about the whole "How does it make the Marauders or even Harry look for not liking Snape?" debate—I think the problem is that people keep trying to apply real-world racial dynamics to a fictional universe. That's a shame because fantasy worlds give us a chance to escape real-world issues. Sure, in our world, four rich white kids bullying a poor Black kid in the '70s would be a terrible look. But race in the Wizarding World doesn't work the same way it does in real life. Nowhere in the books is there mention of racism among wizards based on skin color. The only form of discrimination that exists is blood purity—yes, that can be read as a metaphor for real-world racism, but it's not literally about race. That said, I do get why people might see it that way, so it's something they'll probably need to address. Maybe by making some of the other bullies people of color or explicitly stating why they don't like Snape.

I also saw someone argue that '70s Britain wasn't diverse enough, so having the Marauders pick on one of the few students of color would look bad. I completely disagree with that take. There's no reason to assume Hogwarts wouldn't have been diverse. Wizards live separately from Muggles, so their society doesn't necessarily follow the same demographic patterns. There are only three major European wizarding schools, meaning plenty of magical people from across Europe (including people of color) could have ended up at Hogwarts. And why stop there? Why wouldn't African or American wizards have attended as well (for those that didn't want to go the their respective schools)? Wizards can travel easily, and since race isn't the same issue in their world, it makes sense that Hogwarts could have always been ethnically diverse.

Do I think it was necessary for them to make Snape black? No.

Do I as black person needed Snape to be black? No.

Is it unnecessary controversy? Yes.

However is it really that much of an issue? No. And as a society we shouldn't not do something because some people might be upset about it for the wrong reasons (bigotry).

To be clear, I'm not stating that everybody mad about the Snape casting is a bigot. I understand there are legitimate reasons to not like the casting (such as book accuracy).

I finished HBP book today and whoa, it's by far the best book and the only book I would say is better than the movie. The teen love stuff was short lived and second half of the book while it was fairly loyal in the movie it was still very exciting to read. Especially chapters with Dumbledore and Harry. I never really got into Dumbledore in the movies or cared about their relationship that much, but he really got under my skin with this book.

I doubt it will be an issue. Harry is most likely going to be played by a POC actor as well, so those implications are not present.

Is there a casting update in regards to Harry? I haven't seen anything

There's a "new" paperback book edition coming up, with stenciled edges.

no but it's a completely color blind casting. the best actors will get the roles regardless of ethnicity.

but to me it seems they have found their Harry first (which they are keeping in absolute secrecy with no leaks) before anyone else and it informed their decision in the casting of Snape. the actor who plays Harry is at the very least mixed black.
