Japanese work culture is terrible, and much more homogeneous. But Manhattan is crazy expensive, and I would not live in any of the other boroughs...difficult

Whenever I visit New York something life-changing happens to me. Tokyo is kind of the better city, but unless you're Japanese you'll always be treated like an outsider.
