fountain Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 People trying to act like there is not clear racism at play here

EriKills Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 People being dismissive of this because “but the Little Mermaid!!1!” as if casting light skinned POC wasn’t typically the norm. Garbage casting!
Jynx Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 Terrible casting choice but Disney won't recast her. Nani deserved better than this. Also imagine what Lilo is going to look like.

playboi Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 it’s a children’s movie who cares you can’t be making fun of those anti-halle bailey freaks and then turn around and do the same thing to another girl
Twilish Posted April 16, 2023 Posted April 16, 2023 Like i don’t want to downplay the potential colorism at play here but also find it hard to believe Disney or whoever would blatantly hire this girl as a dig or to be problematic, especially with the current environment we are in and with the recent Ariel backlash. I just can’t help but feel bad for the young actress who was excited for her first big role and now is probably terrified to even be in the movie/promote etc. leave it to Twitter to take it to the most extreme levels though
Gossip_Boy Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 This is a terrible casting choice but are we surprised? Also not some comparing Ariel who is a mythical sea-dwelling creature to Nani who is based on the real experiences of Native Hawaiian women. Worms for brains.

Especially when "colorism" is thrown at someone who isn't white The way you fully don’t know what “colorism” means
VOSS Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 I guess people will never stop being mad about race in casting

I do agree the prerequisites put on casting now are probably difficult to meet but since these two are unknowns and I doubt this production will really need big acting chops they should have found people more accurate to the cartoon, because he looks nothing like David.
TheCheshireCat Posted April 17, 2023 Posted April 17, 2023 This is more what I was imagining live action David would look like

Kekoa Kekumano was literally right there. Then again this is probably going to be terrible so maybe it’s a good thing he wasn’t cast.
