Mae Muller - "I Wrote a Song"

The promo for this on Apple Music is very heavy. I like Mae and hope we do well with it, but I do dislike it at present.

Either way, I’m fully behind supporting the song and hope the song smashes! Incredible start on iTunes and streaming.

I think it's a massive bop

I'm bopping, it's cute :jamming:

I think this is a cute, inoffensive bop. She’s got a nice voice, I think this song could be her breakthrough in the UK, it’s already #1 on UK iTunes.

I really like it.

It's not a winner, but it's also not terrible and we have sent worse. It seems to be doing okay so far, so that's a positive.

I suspect that this will easily debut top 40

Excellent start on Spotify, debuted at #56 which is pretty decent for a Thursday without the NMF exposure.

Jumped up to #64 on Apple Music U.K. but seems to have stalled there for now. Will expect it to hopefully rise a little bit more after people finish work.

The chart hasn’t updated for 4 hours!

#56 on Spotify is insane considering it was released at 8:30.

Ah, ok, I did think it was a bit weird it suddenly stalled there after rising so quickly. Songs always climb quicker on AM than Spotify so if it’s already pushing for Top 50 on Spotify I wouldn’t be surprised if this hits Top 20 on Apple Music by the end of the day

Really encouraging signs so far, especially seeing how much radio play it’s getting and what’s important is it’s getting airplay outside of the BBC stations

Leapt up again on Apple Music, now up to #44

Currently sat at #37 on Apple Music UK pre-One Show exposure. I’m not sure if she’s performing, or just being interviewed.

Sounds like she’s just being interviewed, and not performing. It does worry me that they’re not letting her perform it… it almost makes me feel like they half-expect a live performance to be met negatively, which does not fill me with a lot of hope for the night itself… :rip:

Hopefully they’ve kept her in the rehearsal room to practise.

It’s not exactly much to brag about, but worth mentioning that it debuted at #9 on the Official UK Singles Download charts & #10 on the Official UK Singles Sales Chart today with only one day of tracking.

Posted

It’ll be comfortably top 40 I suspect come Friday.

I agree it’s a bit worrying that she’s not performing it

Her strong start on streaming continues, small climb to #34 on Apple Music UK and she enters the Top 100 on Amazon Music UK at #70 (she is also #1 on the Trending Songs chart)

She has a potential Miley album bomb to contend with, but she’s comfortably ahead of all Miley tracks sans River on Apple Music so I’m reasonably confident this will crack the Top 50 on Spotify tomorrow. Ellie/Calvin will debut ahead of her but I’m hoping for a strong position.

This becoming a legitimate, commercially viable hit is the best possible result for UK Eurovision, by the way. It’s not necessarily about winning. Sam Ryder’s song was fantastic and he did what was needed to challenge Europe’s perceptions of us when it comes to Eurovision, but it didn’t translate in to a long-lasting commercial hit song and hasn’t “launched” him as a huge pop star, even though he’s definitely had some success out of it.

If this translates in to tangible chart success, it’ll prove that Eurovision can and should be taken seriously as a springboard for commercial success and elevating people’s careers; rather than the career suicide most credible artists would have considered it just a few years ago.

Taking someone like Mae Muller, who fits the modern pop star mould and actually has amassed a following already, and investing in her is a positive statement. That’s why I don’t care if this wins, It’s about redefining what Eurovision is to open the door for more credible acts to want to represent us in the future and continue sending quality songs and artists. Albeit a little “run of the mill” it’s still a good pop song & overall a strong choice. I’m hoping she does well on the night!

I must disagree with this. Space Man was huge and is certified Gold and of course, the album went #1 and was top10 for a month. Sold out UK/European tours etc. Definitely a household name.

Sure, it was an incredibly successful song… but that level of commercial single success was relatively “short lived” and very much rode the wave of the response on the night. If Europe said “nah” on the night and it didn’t receive such a strong positive response after his grand final performance, it wouldn’t have translated in to those certifications. Mae’s song is already performing better on streaming than Space Man ever did after it was unveiled which is what I’m getting at.

I don’t disagree that Sam has seen commercial success off the back of his stint, but he isn’t at A-list superstar status. Fair enough, he’s not that type of artist so it’s not exactly a big surprise, but what I mean is Mae Muller fits the mould of the kind of person who should be a “big single selling pop star” and if they make this song a hit in its own right (as in commercially successful before the show and stands on its own as a hit single) then they’ll have achieved something they didn’t with Sam.

I get what you mean. Although, Mae does have a lot of streaming promotion right now and Eurovision is incredibly hyped, so it would’ve been more of a surprise if it wasn’t doing numbers.

It’s hard to compare and actually, we probably shouldn’t, considering that Eurovision was in a completely different light in the UK when Sam released his song.

Either way, let’s hope it’s a hit! It’s sure looking likely to be one. Sam was #1 on Hot Hits UK with the cover last year, so I’m sure Mae will have that in May (lol).

Yes, Sam deserves a lot of credit and we owe him a huge debt for everything he did to rebrand our image to other Eurovision fans across the continent, but I think they’re trying to achieve something different with Mae this year.

It feels like Sam & his song was about the song itself and Eurovision, whereas this year it feels more like they’re trying to launch Mae as an artist and show that there’s life beyond the competition for those who wish to compete. I hope

the song does well!
