the Julia Roberts/George Clooney romcom from last year was already quite high and it was "only" like 60m, it was a Universal theatrical release too :skull:  then again ScarJo (and Penelope?) prob eat up most of that Nancy's The Holiday and It's Complicated had big budgets as well iirc but still..

update 1:

apparently its actually $150m :skull:

update 2:

welp!

update 3! Warner Bros in talks to acquire it (with a smaller budget)

Most of the budget are the actors because om netflix there are no residuals/bonus so they have to charge upfront

I really thought Nancy would finally have a more diverse cast this time around too :doc: (I mean if this is the final lead cast ofc)

Couldn’t they get some fresher actors?

it’s like the film that came out with Reese and Ashton. I wanna see some new blood,

not 2004 rehashes

Mess. And they’ll raise Netflix prices to pay for this movie nobody asked for.

Lots of up and coming/"more recent" actors have been doing romcoms lately too (Jenna Ortega and that guy from Wednesday just shot one for Netflix, Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell are filming one atm, isn't Zendaya's Challengers movie coming out this yr a romcom too? etc)

No wonder why they're going bankrupt

Who's in charge of making these decisions at Netflix? Because why would you approve a 130m film of what's basically a dead genre?

Netflix and Spotify seem to be doing everything possible to be bankrupt.

You can pull the same movie with younger and cheaper actors.

The only one that might draw a little more viewers is Scarlett.

But even then like the amount of money is obcene.

Imagine casting Micheal "the women beater" Fassbander in a rom-com... or anything really.

Will go #1 for like a week and everyone forgets its existence on week 2. What a waste of money.
