Twitter was the only place where cries for help were being heard. I can't believe they had the nerve to shut it down.

erdogan has been talking about people spreading “fake news” about the government not helping enough, even though there is actual evidence :toofunny3:

for example there was an earthquake victim on live tv questioning the help and the news channel muted him :deadbanana:

The man did important research regardless of what he thinks about climate change, there were times when einstein was wrong, but that won't make him any less important in history. Unfortunately his tweet didn't go viral at least this time, that would have saved a lot.

What.... exactly could they have done in such a short amount of time? Everyone evacuate to other countries? It's just not realistic.

"Renaissance Residence with 12 floors and 250 flats, located on İnönü Boulevard in Hatay, has completely collapsed. It is estimated that 800 people are under the rubble in the building, which was built just 3 years ago and folded like paper."

In the meantime Erdogan is doing what he's best at and focus on blocking access to information:

announces 3-month state of emergency that, "surprisingly", ends a week before elections:
https://www.aa.com.tr/en/turkiye/turkiye-announces-3-month-state-of-emergency-in-quake-hit-provinces/2809998

detains four bloggers over social media posts about earthquake:
https://www.dawn.com/news/1735813

refuses Cyprus' offer for assistance and aid:
https://knews.kathimerini.com.cy/en/news/turkey-refuses-cyprus-offer-for-assistance-and-aid

and continues to bomb northern Syria (that was also heavily affected by this earthquake):

edit: up to 180 000 people may be trapped in collapsed buildings :!ohno:

My best friend's cousin were rescued today after 2.5 days thanks to stray cats she was looking after. Another cousin saw cats enter the debris and shouted her name. She replied and they were able to rescue here. 5 story building has collapsed on their apartment though, her mother's body was found soon after and her dad won't survive as well.

This is so awful to think of all the people who are still trapped and suffering for another night :weeps:

It’s true, sadly it’s not always realistic but I was mostly referring to a warning system like in the link below especially when turkey is one of the most endangered countries with most earthquake activity

WHO estimated around 20k probably died but I think the real number is way way higher than that, possibly the deadliest earthquake since 2010 Haiti.

I've slept for a total of maybe 10 hours tops for three days. And this is coming from someone whose family luckily weren't affected. So many people that I know lost a lot of their relatives and friends. It all feels unreal honestly. Today my sister's friend was saying that she lost so much of her childhood friends and her saying something like that so casually made me nauseous, I couldn't even fathom it. The thought of them freezing to death underneath all the debris is keeping me up at night. It reached to minus 10 degrees at night there and it's been more than 72 hours at this point. Hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and although I'm sure they're just happy to be alive right now, I can't stop thinking about how they will be able to function from now on.

I've tried to give my name to the Minister of Health to go there to work as an MD but they said no because the hospital that I'm currently working doesn't have a lot of doctors. A few of my friends went there and I'm so proud of them, I'm watching their social media posts and crying non-stop :weeps: They don't have enough water let alone something to eat but they've been working so hard. I don't even know why I'm writing this here it feels weird, but social media and especially Twitter was responsible for a lot of people being found. The government is trying to supress the numbers and everything but the situation is bad y'all. Please keep us in your prayers and if you wanna donate I suggest this platform: https://ahbap.org/disasters-turkey - I know @alp initially posted some organisations but they are affiliated with the government and we don't trust them.

17,000+? It was just 7,900 the last time I read it (that was last night). This is so terrible. Hearing all of your devastating stories leaves me heartbroken for what those may be going through in Turkey and the affected regions as well. Stay safe and strong

It says there's not even need to send tanks to try to compare this to war. They were terrible for that, and I'm defending the poor victims here, not the turkish government because they too can use anything in their propaganda even when it comes to the suffering of others. But this represents charlie hebdo only. France offered aid to both syria and turkey as it should be.
