Entry 1: Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive (1978)

@fais_2311 @wish

Clue

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2.5 - I thought you had a nice variation here. All Pop, but all different flavors of it.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 1.5 - This is a very very popular song to sample.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 11 - They all used “I Will Survive” very well and they all added their own flavor to the song. I always felt like “After Like” sampled Cher’s “Strong Enough” with its melody.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1.5 - Didn’t care for “Elephant Man” but I adore “After Like” and “Supreme” was surprisingly good.
  • Final Score - 16.5/20

Gateau

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 1 - I will leave one point for geographic differences, but otherwise these songs are all in the pop vein.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 1 - tbh basically everybody and their mother has sampled this song. Last summer when I heard IVE was sampling this I was like “again??” because it was just… so expected. There are very few songs as widely sampled at this one.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 10 - I thought all of them were sampled exquisitely, except After Like has kind of a weird disjointed vocal going with the chorus, leaving the sample to do the heavy lifting in the creakdown.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 2 - Love every one of these tbh.
  • Final Score - 14/20

luckystrike

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2.5 - Elephant Man was a very unique choice, the other two are obviously very pop but still strong choices.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 1 - This song has been sampled quite a lot.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 10.5 - Elephant Man and AFTER LIKE use the sample very nicely to me, in Supreme it’s just kinda there, it adds drama but it comes and goes.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1.5 - Good choices overall.
  • Final Score - 15.5/20

Staryu

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2.5 - I thought the variety was pretty nice, only Robbie/IVE we’re really popish to me, but different kinds of pop.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 1.5 - This song seems pretty commonly sampled.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 10.5 - I feel like the sample was used quite well in all 3 songs, maybe it did a little too much heavy lifting in After Like (but it’s still my favorite of the 3 just because it’s more my vibe.)
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1.5 - These were pretty good.
  • Final Score - 16/20

Entry 2: Bach - Air on G String  from Suite No. 3

@brycehooha @bowdown

Clue

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - All completely different.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 2.5 - Classical songs get sampled all the time, but I’m not sure I’ve heard this particular song used a lot, though.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 12 - They all used the sample well and turned the original into something new and completely different.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1 - “Feel My Rhythm” was horrible to me. The other two weren’t any better.
  • Final Score - 18.5/20

Gateau

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2.5 - Hate to be petty and dock a .5 buttttt… I have to! All three songs are very different in terms of era, location, et al. But FMR and EGBA are both pop songs with rap sections so I kinda have to. But they are very different so I didn’t take off a full point.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Yeah.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 6 - 4 points for AWSOP, it was incredibly refreshing. But the other two… *MichelleVisageFingerWag.gif* In ETGBA, I was left wondering “why is this here?” I honestly felt like the song would have been better without it. In my mind, I could hear a version of the song that didn’t include the sample and its pretty good. In FMR the sample almost feels like background noise against the rest of the song. It doesn’t quite fit, and it was a huge mistake for the producers of that song to leave it in there raw at many parts in it. There’s a whole host of other things happening in that song that don’t really go with it.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1 - Meh.
  • Final Score - 12.5/20

luckystrike

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - Sure
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Sure
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 8.5 - Red Velvet sampling Bach just sounds so funny to me, classical queens, I love the way it’s used in the intro. AWSP is whatever, don’t really feel like it adds anything. EGBA is nice, it’s present enough.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1.2 - 1 is not enough but 1.5 is too much
  • Final Score - 15.7/20

Staryu

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - Definitely very different in almost every way.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - I feel like this isn’t sampled too often.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 8 - I feel like the sample was used amazingly in the dad rock song AWSOP, very pleasant. FMR kinda relies too much on the sample, and then the sample in the last song was almost comical and just seemed random to me.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1 - Hmm not the best songs overall tbh.
  • Final Score - 15/20

Entry 3: London Town - Light of the World

@TruGemini @Kylie Verzosa

Clue

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - Absolutely all different styles.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Have never heard this in my life.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 9 - The sample song is basically unchanged with “L.A. Night”. “Baby Phat” masked it well and made something new. “Each Day Is a New Day” was great and a great use of the sample.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1.5 - Cute selections.
  • Final Score - 16.5/20

Gateau

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2.5 - I personally thought they were quite different but still in the same realm, as very instrumental driven songs.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Definitely wouldn’t have expected this come up at all!
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 10 - They were all used in a way that didn’t rely on the song and all brought something new, but I wouldn’t say it was especially exciting because the original sample doesn’t really inspire much tbh.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - .5 - I honestly felt nothing listening to these. Actually I’m pretty sure this is what disrupted me and caused me to submit so late, because I just did not care about these songs at all. They’re not completely offensive to the ears but they are simply not memorable.
  • Final Score - 16/20

luckystrike

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2.5 -  Pretty eclectic.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Original.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 7.5 - All do a decent job, none is really outstanding to me though
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1 - Not very exciting.
  • Final Score - 14/20

Staryu

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - Yas variety
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Never heard of it so it’s original to me
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 10 - Mainly subtracting points for the first song, I enjoyed it but it wasn’t really used in a unique or interesting way. I loved Folamour’s usage of the sample though, very Sims-music.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 2 - I enjoyed these a lot tbh.
  • Final Score - 18/20

Entry 4: Beethoven - Für Elise

@kittenish @Taeyeon

Clue

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 1.5 - Two pop songs and Pop Rap song.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - .5 - Probably the most popular classical song to choose??
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 8 - The first two Pop songs did an alright job at creating something new. “I Can” is “Fur Elise” with a drum beat added.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - .5 - All of the songs were not something I’d return to.
  • Final Score - 10.5/20

Gateau

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2 - Two (very different, I’ll give you that!) pop songs and a rap song.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 0 - As soon as I saw the name of the sample I audibly groaned. Gurl who isn’t using this…
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 9 - I thought they were actually used in a fun way, although the nas song it seemed unnecessary but still followed a decent way through. Leony’s usage was just… divine tbh. She had a good take on it. Ivy was interesting, problem was it was pretty much bar for bar the same as the original tbh.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 2 - I have a very personal attachment to I Can, because its what we sang as a group all through my elementary years. The teachers would make us shout it back, to remind us that we really could do whatever we wanted, even if our school uh… wasn’t the greatest! And of course Sonata of temptation is an absolute classic. Cheating queen! The Leony song is a welcome addition to my playlist rotation. If I could give you three points for this category, I would !
  • Final Score - 13/20

luckystrike

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2 - Quite eclectic yes.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 1.5 - This piece is sampled quite often.
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 9.5 - First two songs used the sample very nicely, Nas did nothing really, just had it in a loop in the bottom.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1.5 - First two songs carried.
  • Final Score - 14.5/20

Staryu

  • Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 2 - They all 3 kinda have a poppy side to them tbh.
  • Originality (3 pts total) - 1 - I feel like this is one of the most common samples you could have used?
  • Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 8 - I enjoyed the melody in Leony’s song, the sample was used most effectively here. The IVY song was fun I guess, but the Nas song literally did nothing new at all with the sample.
  • Quality (2 pts total) - 1 - Would return to Leony maybe.
  • Final Score - 12/20

Entry 5: The Gap Band - Outstanding

@Delirious @Stevie

Clue

Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - All extremely different.

Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - I feel like only these three songs and maybe like 2 more have sampled this? I can’t think of more.

Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 12 - “911/Mr. Lonely” totally creates something fresh and new. “Inside of Me” is one of my favorite Madonna album cuts and I’m screaming at my never recognizing this sample. All of the songs tooooootally make something new. A masterful entry tbh.

Quality (2 pts total) - 1.9 - Outstanding picks. (Except “Happy”).

Final Score - 19.9/20

Gateau

Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 1 - Three… pop rnb tracks. You got a point for the eras being so different, but I think this might be the least eclectic list of all lol.

Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - incredibly recognizable without being too annoyingly overused. Good play.

Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 12 - Masterclass on sample usage. Each song completely transformed the original but took it on in a way that was SO specific to each era and felt new each time. Despite the lack of genre diversity each made up with it by being a totally new spin each time. Luv that!

Quality (2 pts total) - 2 - All three songs are top notch A+

Final Score - 18/20

Luckystrike

Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - Eclectique.

Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - Originalé.

Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 11 - All 3 songs use the sample extremely smoothly, only docked a point cause the Tyler song isn’t as great.

Quality (2 pts total) - 2 - Qualified.

Final Score - 19/20

Staryu

Eclecticness (1 pt/song - 3 pts total) - 3 - Love the variety here

Originality (3 pts total) - 3 - I can’t think of any songs that sample this besides the ones you used.

Usage (4 pts/song - 12 pts total) - 11 - You picked an amazing sample song, I feel each of these songs use it in interesting and unique ways, and it’s not an obvious sample at all to me, Happy is a little basic but the other two are immaculate.

Quality (2 pts total) - 2 - 3 good to great songs, would listen to all 3 again.

Final Score - 19/20

Welcome to Tribal Council! You MUST answer your question(s) publicly in this thread to have your vote count. Your answer and vote are due by 9 PM EST on Sunday, March 19th. Let us also bring in the members of our jury...

@touya kinomoto @Guero @Luckitty

@Delirious - How does it feel moving up to #2 in the overall averages? You are closing in on brycehooha, who has been #1 for quite awhile! Do you think you can snatch that #1 position one day?

@Stevie - Congratulations on immunity once again! Reflecting on 10/11 rounds of immunity now, how do you feel that has impacted your strategic game? Has this been a unique opportunity to drive bold strategy without the risk of going home? Or has it been a temptation to just go along for the ride and say "not me, don't care"?

@TruGemini - How do you feel about Stevie being immune for the entire game? How do you think the jury is perceiving challenge success as opposed to other factors?

@Kylie Verzosa - Last round, we saw two fans leave the game. Do you think that any of the remaining fans will stick together, or has this driven a split between that original tribe?

@fais_2311 - The final "secret pair" left standing (or multiple pairs, if in tact at the final 8) will win an advantage. How does this impact decision making for you tonight? Do you think the final pair is out there already with an advantage? Or if it is not won yet... do you try to ensure that a certain pair gets it? Or perhaps keep multiple pairs around to minimize the power's impact?

@wish - If there are multiple "secret pairs" remaining, how do you think they should interact/align? Do you think they should be going for an advantage or securing long-term allies?

@brycehooha - Sample Showdown was a brand new challenge for ATRL Survivor! What is your review of it? Should it be back in the future and if so, any tweaks?

@bowdown - Your name came up on two parchments last round! Have you figured out who cast those votes? Do you think you are in danger again tonight.... or perhaps those who wrote your name are instead?

@kittenish - We have yet to see a hidden immunity idol come out this season. Do you have any idea where they are hiding? How does that potential risk impact your strategy?

@Taeyeon - Who do you think is controlling this season's strategy? Is there one particular person or group that is the mastermind, or do you think it changes from round to round (i.e. voting blocs)?

real fun theme like it was rly cool! pls bring it back for more seasons (not the judging tho.) the use of 3 songs made it challenge but interesting to find good ones!!

2) Test of Resilience

If your pairing is the final one left in the game, you will receive a reward. Alternatively, if multiple pairs survive until the final 8, they will receive a reward of lesser caliber. The more pairs remaining at that time, the less impactful the reward.

Oh. Lot of questions this round.

First, I rather win money more than an advantage like that cause it’s no longer an advantage when other people will know about it too. The pairs are no longer a secret. Good luck girls. Watch out for the bus.

As for your question, it’s not really going to impact my decision

And spoiler alert, we don’t have the final pair yet. Will we have the final pair after this tribal? Maybe.

spacer.png

But yeah I kinda like your idea of keeping multiple pairs around to minimize the power’s impact. Sharing is caring but if I still have my partner, I will target another pair. Imagine if ya’ll only win something like challenge advantage instead of something like idol. So fight now

I guess there's benefits and drawbacks either way. I personally would want the big advantage, but I recognize the social risk in fighting to be the last pair alive

but ultimately my opinion is irrelevant bc my partner is GONE. rip auburn!

I applaud Stevie being so consistent in challenges, I think it's a good attribute to have. I'm a bit jealous quite frankly.

In all honesty, I don't think the jury will perceive it in any specific fashion. This has been a very strategy based season, and I think the jury is will reflect that.

well it seems as if the fans idol went home in aurora's pockets however the whereabouts of the other 2 are up in the air i guess? just like any season u always have ur suspicions who could potentially have it so it's kinda just business as usual playing the game like idk u kinda have to factor it in to every vote bc idols are a risk every season and u never know who could be close to who like just bc one person has an idol doesnt mean they cant play it for some one else so yeah idk im not necessarily doing anything different i guess no1gaf

Posting on Stevie's behalf:

Tbh the wins haven’t impacted my strategy that much. I try to always be diplomatic in my decisions. Unfortunately though, this is a critical time in the game. If you’re not trying to drive votes then when will you? It’s important to have a claim at the end so you don’t end up a zero vote finalist!
