rl231 Posted March 15, 2023 Author Posted March 15, 2023 (edited) @bowdown @brycehooha @Delirious @fais_2311 @kittenish @Kylie Verzosa @Stevie @Taeyeon @TruGemini @wish LOBA, welcome to Round 11! Your challenge is... Sample Showdown Shout out to @Gateau for coming up with this round!!! First things first, you will all be competing in PAIRS! That means the highest scoring pair will win immunity. The objective in this challenge is to choose one song, and choose three songs that sample this song. You will also write a short, 3-4 sentence statement explaining your song choices, how they all fit together, and why you think your samples work the best. No teams may use the same sample. First come, first serve! You will be judged with the following criteria: Eclecticness - 3 points, 1 point per song, for each song that is from a completely different era, style, vibe, and genre from the others. Originality - 3 points - Is this song commonly sampled? By everyone? Or is this an unexpected choice? Usage - 12 points (4 points per song) - Are the samples used in a necessary, interesting way that will transform the song into something refreshing? Or are they simply piggybacking off the original's success. Example of a well-used sample: Ke$ha's Take It Off using an Arabian riff, which completely overhauled the song's subject matter & added plenty of new elements. Example of a bad sample: Saweetie's My Type ripping Freek A Leek, which changed almost nothing about the original song, essentially leaving it to be a direct copy. Quality - 2 points. Do they actually sound any good? This is obviously completely up to taste, so don't choose songs at random! As a reminder, here are your teams: brycehooha x bowdown TruGemini x Kylie Verzosa Delirious x Stevie Taeyeon x kittenish wish x fais_2311 You will have ~48 hours (Thursday, March 16th at 8:30 PM EST) to submit your entry, and you must submit your main song within the first 24 hours. However, once that's sent, it's locked. Best of luck! Edited March 15, 2023 by rl231

ATRL Moderator Element Posted March 19, 2023 ATRL Moderator Posted March 19, 2023 ROUND 11 ENTRIES: SAMPLE SHOWDOWN Results will be posted a little bit later tonight! In the meantime, enjoy the entries! _____________________________________________________________________________ Entry 1: Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive (1978) @fais_2311 @wish Sample #1: Robbie Williams - Supreme (2000) https://open.spotify.com/track/4dZ3V71vsqSn9MJ18y8YaJ?si=65d4366b022a4e7a Sample #2: IVE - After Like (2022) https://open.spotify.com/track/2gYj9lubBorOPIVWsTXugG?si=06f4fbd6115249be Sample #3: Elephant Man - Willie Bounce (2005) https://open.spotify.com/track/0pjbztKqMcjVZpDYokMBhI?si=b761f1ba94fc4a37 The beloved 1978 disco classic I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor has crossed through generations and touched every corner of the world through the use of sampling. Three songs in particular — After Like by IVE, Willie Bounce by Elephant Man, and Supreme by Robbie Williams — serve as evidence of the original sample’s ability to transcend time and reach diverse audiences from varying genres. From Supreme’s bittersweet pop-rock to Willie Bounce’s dancehall groove to After Like’s modern house-pop punch, the iconic I Will Survive has shown its flexibility by successfully morphing into any genre it’s used in. It’s also important to note the vast geographic diversity of these songs, as Robbie Williams (UK), Elephant Man (Jamaica), and IVE (South Korea) each come from different parts of the world to provide unique versions of the original sample with their differences in genre, rhythm, and cultural flavor. _____________________________________________________________________________ Entry 2: Bach - Air on G String from Suite No. 3 @brycehooha @bowdown "Feel My Rhythm" - Red Velvet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9At2ICm4LQ&ab_channel=SMTOWN) "A Whiter Shade of Pale" - Procol Harum (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ym8sVFBgJMc&ab_channel=ClassicHitsStudio) "Everything's Gonna Be Alright" - Sweetbox (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzTT5M8zBu4&ab_channel=sweetbox) We chose this sample, “Air on the G String From Suite No. 3” by Johann Sebastian Bach (no, it's not a pre-cursor to the Thong Song ) , as we felt that this classical piece would be able to have a lot to offer, serving as the backbone for a variety of different songs. This is shown by how diverse each song that sampled it is, spanning 90s hip-hop, 2020s kpop, and 60's classic rock songs! In each song, the sample is used in different way, like in "Feel My Rhythym", the sample is played throughout almost the entire song, and its melody and chords are spliced in different ways. While in "Everythings Gonna Be Alright" and "A Whiter Shade of Pale", the sample is used in the hook/riff, overlaid with a classic hip-hop beat in the former, and psychedelic guitar and lyrics in the latter. _____________________________________________________________________________ Entry 3: London Town - Light of the World @TruGemini @Kylie Verzosa (full entry here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NKJLfHR56llU5A1vl5r8D9d2tFzTN9yvdwpm6kz-XbQ/edit?usp=drivesdk) _____________________________________________________________________________ Entry 4: Beethoven - Für Elise @kittenish @Taeyeon https://open.spotify.com/track/3SmsqaN5Hr7IFrvnzMQqvG?si=db0bb1c87ee04634 https://open.spotify.com/track/0mKkaDT4biu1Fmuo7cX8aT?si=e5caaa2548fe40c0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvVfgvHucRY&ab_channel=NasVEVO i guess this applies to a lot of classical samples but TO ME fur elise specifically is such an easy song to sample and make it good and fun bc most of the piece really is based off of that one main line which makes it super recognizable and when used in modern music, everyone can point it out and vaguely knows what it is. sonata of temptation is a really wild korean trot song that features the main line of fur elise in guitar, strings, piano, and vocals in a fun a lively way by making that main line consistent throughout the song but not necessarily the actual melody of the song. nas' i can proves that it is a strong enough sample to use as the background track throughout the whole strong in a way that isnt boring or out of place in an inspiring rap song. and lastly no more second chances by leony features fur elise to it's fullest by using the main line to create a new melody which is heard in the vocals of the chorus followed by a distorted electric guitar playing fur elise. _____________________________________________________________________________ Entry 5: The Gap Band - Outstanding @Delirious @Stevie https://spotify.link/l3v4W6O7dyb Released in 1982, we decided to go with this funk love song because it's unexpected, has many interesting elements to sample and our 3 song choices are all underrated, from different years and are very sonically different from each other. "911/Mr. Lonely" seamlessly transforms the interpolation into a new listening experience without making it messy or stale as it even breaks down the sample into a new melody/structure (1:27). Madonna drum sample isn’t obvious, but upon closer listen, it's able to elevate "Inside of Me's" sultry/pop vibe, which thus showcases the sample’s versatility. We chose "Happy" because it was from the 2000s, R&B, is a more upbeat/groovy usage of “Outstanding's" bass and drums, and lyrically, it's similar; the joyous feeling of falling in love.
