Delirious Nicole Dollenganger - Lemonade
brycehooha Hozier - Sedated
Kylie Verzosa Sia - Chandelier
Allday Nessa Barrett - Dying On The Inside
Aurora Tove Lo - Habits (Stay High)
Fifteen Arctic Monkey - R U Mine?
Alfred Kim Petras - Personal Hell
wish Solange - Cranes in the Sky
Starchild Conor Oberst - No One Changes
kittenish Big Bang - Sober (lyrics)
Luckitty Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb Remix)

Nicole Dollenganger - Lemonade

  • Gateau - 6.5 - This doesn’t really do it for me. The song does capture the “dousing emotional pain with antics” part, but ir only just scratches the surface. The only line that really explores WHY she’s doing this is “they all say he’s got a girl on the side”, and then the hedonistic act is just her describing all the wats she’s getting ******. Similarly, I’d say the only lyric that even slightly alludes to her knowing its bad is “in the backyard full of dying flowers” which isn’t really driving the point home.
  • Luckystrike - 8 - I like the fact that her reaction to being cheated on is to cheat right back, definitely toxic and hedonistic if I do say so myself, but I do wish it would’ve delved a bit deeper into it, maybe she should’ve killed him at the end and I would’ve given this a 10!
  • Rotunda - 9 - To me, this song speaks more to someone cheating back as a form of revenge than as full on hedonism. I think that infidelity is definitely a hedonistic act, and there’s an argument to be made that lemonade is a metaphor for alcohol,  but there’s an air of debauchery that’s missing from the song itself to get the full points.
  • Supaspaz - 9 - What hath Lana Del Rey wrought?! I hate this, but it certainly fits the hedonistic bill.

Hozier - Sedated

  • Gateau - 8.5 - I’m kind of a stickler for direct, forward approaches but its a decent entry.
  • Luckystrike - 9 - A very good fit for the theme indeed, I’m only not giving this a 10 because some of the lines are way too ambiguous for me, probably I’m just dumb.
  • Rotunda - 10- I forgot how much I love this song. It definitely encapsulates the theme of the round perfectly, highlighting various vices that Hozier uses to numb himself from a greater pain.
  • Supaspaz - 10 - Had to dig out my AP English hat from high school to parse those poetically opaque lyrics, but if I’m interpreting it correctly, this is a perfect fit with the theme.

Sia - Chandelier

  • Gateau - 10 - This fulfills literally every point in a completely unambiguous way. Very good.
  • Luckystrike - 10 - Exactly and I told her I said ma’am.
  • Rotunda - 10 - You already know you ate this. Good job.
  • Supaspaz - 10 - One, two, three, one, two three points. One, two, three, one, two three points. One, two, three, one, two three points. Then add one more to get your score.

Nessa Barrett - Dying On The Inside

  • Gateau - 5 - Hedonism isn’t only limited to sex drinking and drugs, but an eating disorder isn’t really… hedonistic? It fulfills “Doing something you know is bad” part but not hedonistic in nature, which was the whole point of the assignment.
  • Luckystrike - 4.5 - This is definitely a depressing song but I honestly think the point of the theme went a little bit over your head. I do see the fact that she is talking about body image issues which led to an eating disorder, but it’s missing that whole pleasure aspect, she’s not doing for pleasure, she’s doing it because of standards that she feels the need to fit in so I think that’s where it misses the key point mainly.
  • Rotunda - 3- Hedonism is about indulging in life’s pleasures. This song, which is explicitly about an eating disorder, in a sense represents the opposite of that. With that said, I can see the thought process here.
  • Supaspaz - 3 - The emotional pain is certainly clear, but there’s absolutely no indulging of pleasure to deal with it happening here.

Tove Lo - Habits (Stay High)

  • Gateau - 10 - you mustve been quick on your fingers
  • Luckystrike - 10 - Congrats on snatching this song!
  • Rotunda - 10- yeah
  • Supaspaz - 10 - I have a feeling the theme was crafted with this song in mind.

Arctic Monkey - R U Mine?

  • Gateau - 3 - I actually kinda understand where you were going for this. Though I wish you would have read the rubric I posted in the general chat :|
  • Luckystrike - 1 - What in the world? Like I’m sorry but I don’t even get the thought process here, I’m just extremely confused and I will be looking forward to hearing your thought process whenever results happen.
  • Rotunda - 1- You saw the word “misbehaving” and called it a day huh?
  • Supaspaz - 2 - This is a banger, but it’s way off base for the theme. The narrator is just lusting after a woman.

Kim Petras - Personal Hell

  • Gateau - 3.5 - ??????????? no?
  • Luckystrike - 6.5 - Sex with this person is definitely her way to escape whatever she is going through, and she does a decent job at showcasing that with the “I’m sad but down to ****” and “when you touch me I don’t need pills” lines, but it kind of just stays there and it centers a bit more on the sex rather than whatever makes her need that toxic sex.
  • Rotunda - 5- This is okay I think? I wish Kim delved deeper into what exactly she was suppressing or how this sex numbs the pain, but there’s enough implicit stuff here to work with
  • Supaspaz - 5 - I almost want to dock you for making me listen to Kim Petras, but your score is already suffering from choosing a song with such a tangential connection to the theme. At least “Yeah, I'm sad, but down to ****” summarizes it well.
  • PENALTY: This song was submitted 5 hours late. As done in past seasons, there will be a 0.2 point penalty for each hour late. Thus, 1 point has been deducted from the average.

Solange - Cranes in the Sky

  • Gateau - 7.5 - Its a decent entry that really hits on the “dealing with emotional pain by self-indulging in things” part but not so much on the actual hedonism or why she’s in anguish.
  • Luckystrike - 8.5 - It’s a pretty good fit, my only complaint would be that some of the things she mentions don’t really feel “bad” enough to be considered hedonism like, a millionaire going shopping to cope? Just a Tuesday for Solange.
  • Rotunda - 7 - At its core, this song is more about coping strategies broadly than just using hedonism as a way to numb pain. Yes, Solange does drink, dance, and shop to get over her pain, but she also works, keeps busy, and reads. That second category of actions isn’t hedonism.
  • Supaspaz - 10 - To paraphrase the great Tyra Banks: “Habits (Stay High),” but make it artistic.

Conor Oberst - No One Changes

  • Gateau - 2.5 - I kinda see what you were going for but he didn’t really DO much? Of anything?
  • Luckystrike - 2 - Well… he just hates his life I guess.
  • Rotunda - 2 - There is maybe a brief fantasizing about hedonism in the first stanza
  • Supaspaz - 1 - What?

Big Bang - Sober

  • Gateau - 6 - Protip: When there’s so much fluff in the lyrics that distracts from the main point of the song, its a huge detractor and causes the whole thing to lose focus. So here, we’re looking for entries that talk about doing hedonistic acts to escape pain, but you’ve sent a song where like 10% is about that and the rest is about a failed relationship.
  • Luckystrike - 4 - Not feeling her, it has hints of hedonism but most of the song is just suffering which was really not what we were looking for.
  • Rotunda - 6.5 - I’m not too pleased with this. This would work more for me if the artist wasn’t sober and was actually using drugs/alcohol to numb pain. Instead, this is more of a retrospective about how they used to use that to cope with emotions, and are failing to establish a new normal without those aids.
  • Supaspaz - 8.5 - Ick, I cannot listen to this. It’s a decent entry for the theme, but would be stronger if the narrator seemed more regretful about how much he hates being sober.

Mike Posner - I Took A Pill In Ibiza (Seeb Remix)

  • Gateau - 10 - Parfait. He does drugs, spends all his money, and jumps from girl to girl. What MORE explanations do we need??
  • Luckystrike - 8 - It came off as pretentiousness at first but as the song progresses I did get the coping vibes due to fame, not my favorite showcase of the theme but it works!
  • Rotunda - 8 - I think that there’s a lot of delicate work being done here lyrically that makes me more inclined to give this a higher score than I normally would. There’s a weird haziness and vagueness surrounding the things that brought Posner to turn to drugs for a decade in the first paragraph that get alluded to in somewhat better detail later.
  • Supaspaz - 9.5 - A truly brilliant piece of pop songwriting. The actual hedonistic behavior is mostly confined to the first verse, but the overall arc encapsulates the theme nicely.

Speezy Jazmine Sullivan - Bust Your Windows
TruGemini Justin Timberlake - Drink You Away
selena_lavigne Lana del Rey - Gods & Monsters
Guero Tove Lo - hey, you got drugs?
fais_2311 GOLDN (Josh Golden) - Heartbreak Drugs
Auburn Seeb & Dagny - Drink About
Mariah4life Lana Del Rey - Hope Is A Dangerous Thing…
Stevie Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)
touya kinomoto Nicki Minaj - Pills N Potions
bowdown Jessie Reyez, JRM - Imported
Taeyeon Lykke Li - Sex Money Feelings Die

Jazmine Sullivan - Bust Your Windows

  • Gateau - 6 - When I saw the entry I thought “wow what a mess for you” but then as I thought more about the lyrics it is oddly fitting. My main problem is that its more of a song centered around revenge and it only talks about busting the windows out someone’s car in retaliation, which doesn’t really seem like a very GREAT interpretation of the theme.
  • Luckystrike - 3 - I personally don’t think this fits pretty much at all. She bust the windows of his car cause she was angry… like I don’t see the element of herself knowing that it’s something wrong but she’s doing it either way to cope, it’s a huge miss for me.
  • Rotunda - 6.5 - Vandalism certainly is a form of hedonism, but Jazmine engaging in one singular hedonistic act, doesn’t necessarily rise to the standard of some of the other entries here.
  • Supaspaz - 7 - I have to give you credit for the most convincingly creative interpretation of the theme.

Justin Timberlake - Drink You Away

  • Gateau - 7 - Suffers from the syndrome I described in my ‘Bust Your Windows’ critique. Its just too one-note for me.
  • Luckystrike - 7 - Does what the theme asks for generally, but it almost starts to feel like a song about longing for someone.
  • Rotunda - 8- I’d argue that this is a bit too downtrodden for hedonism, but it hits all the notes otherwise
  • Supaspaz - 8 - The problem here is that JT never expresses any sense of pleasure from Jack, Jim and all their friends.

Lana del Rey - Gods & Monsters

  • Gateau - 8 - This works well, the only issues I have with it are that she’s a bit ambiguous when talking about the emotional anguish, and the knowing its bad for her. And when I say ambiguous, I don’t mean its not there. Its just not completely straightforward.
  • Luckystrike - 6.5 - I’m mixed here because there’s certainly elements of the theme there but it’s in such a weird context, like I just don’t fully get it.
  • Rotunda - 5- Yeah she’s engaging in hedonism, but the emotional component is nonexistent
  • Supaspaz - 5 - One of those Lana Del Rey songs that I honestly cannot tell if it’s meant to be taken seriously. There’s certainly hedonism here, but it’s in the context of a cautionary tale about the downfall of an innocent, not using pleasure to mask pain.

Tove Lo - hey, you got drugs?

  • Gateau - 10 - This fit even more than Habits tbh.
  • Luckystrike - 9 - And Habits fits a little better to me so take your 9 and go!
  • Rotunda - 10- Fits the brief
  • Supaspaz - 10 - Not her remaking “Habits (Stay High)” as a ballad.

GOLDN - Heartbreak Drugs

  • Gateau - 7.5 - Very one note and undescriptive.
  • Luckystrike - 9 - This song was horrible but other than that pretty straightforward with the theme.
  • Rotunda - 10- No notes
  • Supaspaz - 10 - It sounds like an AI bot read the theme and then wrote a song. Equally as terrible as it is appropriate for this challenge.

Seeb & Dagny - Drink About

  • Gateau - 6 - Ya lost the plot a bit B!
  • Luckystrike - 5 - This is like, bare minimum.
  • Rotunda - 4.5 - It’s kinda implied that the drinking is used to cope with things, but this is really about the artist wanting a different object of their affection
  • Supaspaz - 6 - This is more about being hung up on an ex than engaging in hedonistic behavior to cope.

Lana Del Rey - Hope Is A Dangerous Thing…

  • Gateau - 5 - I get what you were trying to do here, it just didn’t really follow through the way we were looking for.
  • Luckystrike - 3 - No hedonism to be found here unfortunately,
  • Rotunda - 3.5 - There’s a few lines that allude to something, but otherwise I’m perplexed
  • Supaspaz - 4 - The second chorus is the only part where I hear a hint of the theme.

Blu Cantrell - Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops!)

  • Gateau - 7 - So funny story, I pitched this song for a completely different theme, which, looking at these tries would have been an ace in the whole for a lot of you lol. But here’s the thing about revenge-based entries like this one: they don’t focus on the personal enjoyment of the narrator, its instead “I’m only doing this because I want to get back at you” which isn’t EXACTLY the assignment, only technically the assignment. So you get a cute 7.
  • Luckystrike - 3 - Same as Bust Your Windows, this is not something bad for her, she just wanted revenge.
  • Rotunda - 6.5- While spending is definitely hedonistic, here it appears to be primarily a way for her to make his pockets hurt rather than something she’s grappling with emotionally. This suffers from the same issue as Bust Yo Windows where they’re one-off acts of revenge rather than a full embrace of hedonism
  • Supaspaz - 9 - A slightly unconventional take, but it definitely works. And we love this stone-cold classic!

Nicki Minaj - Pills N Potions

  • Gateau - 5 - Doesn’t really hit too hard, and when reading the crits of the other entries you should be able to figure out why tbh. Note for future rounds: just having one part of the song fit a theme is not enough! The more fluff, the more tough it’ll be for you!
  • Luckystrike - 5 - Ehhhhhhhhh, not enough hedonism in here.
  • Rotunda - 6.5- This is one of those songs where there’s enough stuff throughout that’s on theme, but where I’d have to do legwork to make the song a fully coherent, strong entry, and I don’t feel particularly inclined to do that in a round where a lot of other people were able to find perfect fits
  • Supaspaz - 6 - A whiff of the theme in the chorus.

Jessie Reyez, JRM - Imported

  • Gateau - 8 - There’s not really enough content here that fits what I’m personally booking for. This is okay, but it focuses far too much on the failed relationship and not enough on the actions of the hedonism by the narrator herself.
  • Luckystrike - 8 - I like it even though it might be a little one note, it gets the point across.
  • Rotunda - 9.5 - A strong entry, just a bit too melancholy to really get the full points of hedonism
  • Supaspaz - 9 - Just this side of too morose to be hedonistic.

Lykke Li - Sex Money Feelings Die

  • Gateau - 9.5 - Being slightly petty with this score but it doesn’t exactly hit the mark like the other 10s so I’m driving it down x
  • Luckystrike - 10 - One of the best fits of the round surprisingly.
  • Rotunda - 10- Good job
  • Supaspaz - 10 - What is it with these Swedish girls numbing their pain with partying, drugs and casual sex?

Final results coming up!

The song you choose should display the meaning upfront. An interview with your artist clarifying the meaning of the song will not be taken into consideration.

Its important to remember we have to sift through 22 entries, figuring out the hidden meaning in every single entry is simply impossible. so the less room for interpretation the better  the goal should, basically, be to find a song that is undeniably dead-on.
