Mel. Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 5 minutes ago, Zack said: Wendy was not raised in Canada. She was born in Korea and moved to Canada around age 11 and stayed there till she was around 18 which was when she was casted by SM. Her parents and sister live in Canada, so that's why she now has citizenship. When she arrived in Canada she didn't speak a lick of English, so the fact she managed to acquire English with zero accent is super impressive. But she's suffering the typical deterioration of ESL people who stop speaking it as much in their daily lives. I don't think Mark is the "best" English speaker though, even though he's native. Johnny is literally right there and better than him for example, and there are plenty others. Interesting, I thought she was born and raised in Canada, I guess that’s why her singing is starting to sound like a non-native English speaker and I was gonna mention Johnny who I know is from Chicago and born and raised in America

But these days it's a little hit and miss. She still sounds fluent singing in English though imo. Her collab with John Legend has no accent etc. for example. It's just talking that seems awkward for her. Johnny and also Jaehyun seems to be more fluent than I'd expect considering he only lived in the U.S. for like 4 years.

Witnessed ET Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 (edited) Sorry y’all but this English speaker comparison is so weird lol. Especially when you’re doing it among people who were born or raised in English speaking countries. Ofc they’re gonna be fluent in English since they spent time there during their formative years. now let’s talk about idols who didn’t really grow up in English speaking countries but have really good English like CL or Jackson Wang (even though he’s from hongkong so idk if I should count him). and idk I should count Vernon from seventeen but he was born in New York and moved to Korea at age four so technically he only learned English by speaking it with his parents at home. So in that regard, he speaks it really well. Edited May 1, 2023 by Witnessed ET
Zack Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Just now, Josh said: how long was Johnny in Chicago before he became an Idol? Basically he was still "in" Chicago because he was a part time trainee and only trained during summers at first. He still continued high school in Chicago and only trained full time in Korea after he graduated high school. He was being finalized for EXO but was cut late in the process, so that made his training period even longer until he was added to NCT 127.

English-speaking idols (native or not) is such a dynamic concept in general to me. I’m always baffled when I take idols in account that had never set foot in an anglophonic country prior, but have immaculate enunciation in English like CL and Giselle (though I’ve heard that English is actually Giselle’s primary language), but you have native speakers like Mark Tuan that are perplexing accented or have weird diction, despite spending most of their formative years speaking the language. Harrier Posted May 1, 2023 Posted May 1, 2023 Of all idols BoA still impresses me the most with her language skills. Despite debuting at age 13 she somehow found the time to become completely fluent in Japanese and very strong in English too A savant Japanese skill has really decreased among idols over the years as the market has become less relevant. In 2nd gen you had whole groups that spoke at least decent Japanese, like Kara and Shinee. Now you're lucky to have one ethnic Japanese member and that's the extent of it

In fact, when aespa first debuted, J-netz bashed Giselle for sounding "foreign" in Japanese, so English really is her strongest language it seems, probably down to her schooling growing up.

Hide contents tiktok viraliTY should make it happen though she’s kinda close tbh! her onstage banter for the GGGM tour was great and clear, and she even had some quick rapport with the crowd at times like yeah she has to work at it a little, but she’s able to joke around and stuff which is really fun also unrelated but this just reminded me that someone gave her a (new!) bra at the end of my show neeeed the tiktok twinks to make her choreo go viral we need the #TailChallenge or something
