Speaking of k-groups in Japan. Is SM ever going serious with aespa over there? They have pontential and is such a waste to see keep chasing the US recognition when Japan has shown more interest.

SM's desperation for the US is just sad... nothing is sticking at all (rightfully so)

I want them to have a Japanese debut SO badly :monkey:

something either like Wildside or Cookie Jar would be cute!

I kinda fell off from Kpop around the time covid hit after being big into it during uni 2015-2019. I especially stopped paying attention to RV despite them being my faves and only listened once so I have absolutely no idea how Queendom, FMR or Birthday fared and I’m trying to piece it together now nnn

I completely ignored aespa until 2023 and they’re now becoming my faves. When I went to Seoul I bought a couple of their albums (not Girls tho, she can choke)

the spotify stats are all you needa know :giraffe:

queendom was their long awaited after psycho that performed moderately ok but still a letdown. people want sultry rv.

birthday sales can be attributed to fmr's success. most were preorders anyway which is always due to the goodwill generated from the previous era.

birthday had bulk sales but that means nothing and spotify is king. lets not pretend the entire era was bigger than fmr :deadbanana:

Birthday’s success is because of FMR. In films, you expect a larger opening for the first week of a sequel if the entry before it was good. FMR being a digital smash is what set Birthday up to be a strong physical era.

And yes Birthday didn’t move the needle nor did it grow their fanbase, but the physical sales are a testament to how much bigger they were when they released it.

We can only hope and pray. We finally got “Zoom Zoom” and it would be amazing if they’d do a physical single or two next year.

Thank God they changed it :deadbanana:

We have yet to witness a revival like the one RV had with Psycho.

They fact they were flopping with three comebacks, each one doing worse than the one before, for like a year and just like 6 days before ending 2019 they released one of their biggest hits ever. :jonny:

Honestly, I can understand yours (and other fans) annoyance with this but I really think the members being invisible to nonfans is the best thing for the group/fandom and what enables Seventeen to be what they are. I was kind of upset at first when I started delving into their content and music/performances because I was like d*mn they're actually great and everyone ignores them. But when you look at groups who do get nonfan attention, every little thing they do gets speculated and turned into a controversy. I love Seventeen's messiness, humor, and how open they are about fights/pettiness. Things like Hoshi mocking Seungkwan's limpwrist, members making fun of Dino's bad drinking habits, the regular Mingyu draggings, physical attacks, s*x jokes, cussing each other out, stories like Seungkwan giving 3 months of silent treatment, and how much they drag each other in general would cause so much drama with nonfans.  Jeonghan's tea spilling lives and some of the Insomnia Zero draggings alone would cause so many dumb issues and eventually Pledis would have to discontinue those classics

Seventeen would have to be so heavily censored to avoid constant controversies/drama, especially members like Jeonghan, that they wouldn't even be the same group and would lose so much of their appeal. By being out of the general kpop consciousness, they're able to be as messy/funny as they want.

That's even just covering lighter stuff. Things like the jeonghan f******** incident (which honestly is pretty funny :dies:) would have been an absolute mess if any other successful bg did that. Even Mingyu b**chslapping him on live would've caused issues if it got to the wrong people (Mingyu was in the right though)

It also enables the members to be more comfortable in their private life. A lot of the members are already known to be dating, with some of their partners literally being identified, but it's never become a big deal because it didn't make it out of the fandom. Look at the mess Joshua's gf became after it became svt's only relationship to largely make it out of the fandom. Not just dating, but friends too. Members like Dino and Seungkwan are known and on camera to be close friends with and hangout with female idols and literally nothing happens while some male idols will get attacked for just being near a woman

I think while it's annoying to have them discredited, it would be way worse to have them being constantly attacked and eventually censored :bird: In the end, they're still highly successful and appreciated and acclaimed where it matters, and they get to be their funny selves too

Anyways lets give Wave a stream! :clap3: Love her

Oh yes I agree that being popular outside of the fandom is a wild beast on its own and it comes with the territory, so for the boys, having a dedicated huge fandom is honestly miles better than let’s say being individually popular to the gp. And yeah “Going Seventeen” wouldn’t have become such a cult classic amongst the fandom if the dynamic was different and they were heavily censored. I mean they’re still kpop idols at the end but you’re right, that term is taken much loosely with Svt because they aren’t scrutinized as much by the outside public as other individually popular members of other bgs/ggs. It’s honestly a blessing in that sense because we get to see them as authentic as possible from kpop standards. The only curse here is that their immense talents and skills will always be underrated by an average kpoop stan who’s not a carat. :'(

but anyway, yess Wave is one of my faves from the Performance unit :jamming:

the way they absolutely have songs that would do well in the US (Bad Boy, Psycho, Thirsty) but they try and force stuff like Life’s Too Short and Better Things

absolutely NO neural function with whatever team is in charge of that :toofunny2:

it looks cheap and unneeded. I think whoever used all the great footage for their teasers and left them with this embarrassing MV should be FIRED

Just like how amazing the teasers were for seulgi's 28 reasons, it looked like a film trailer then we got none of that in the official mv. This video looks like it was shot on one set.

I have to laugh at myself because I didn’t even like Psycho and it was the same time I fell off and then years later found out how huge it was on Spotify :rip:  but I am forever glad they went with Zimzalabim regardless

SM having Illusion and Thirsty, which could've been cute hits for them, but going with THOSE two will forever just get on my nerves

at this point, they deserve not one bit of success from the US ever like... especially with the way they think :dies:

if they ever had an album filled w bad boys and psychos it would clear

idk why sm thinks "red" happy uptempos are what they need when the market has demanded sultry velvet and its more fitting in this stage of their careers as grown women

Bad Boy and Psycho will forever be the two biggest chances they had with US hits...

but that company just hates RV :gaycat7:

peekaboo was way more of an interesting murder music video and the track was way easier to digest

"chill kill" is such an awkward choice of words. i thought they were going to reference kill bill or something, or use the phrase like "take a chill pill"

RV is about to snatch another Top 3 hit and they've been in the business for 9 years while others falls off before they even  hit 7.  Weird how often people are discounting and minimizing their success

In this type of industry where anyone can take your spot or when hype dries down.  Longevity will always be the greatest achievement, it's not that hard to give them their flowers :bird:
