These "breakthrough" successes are unfathomably large and expensive projects that even the Korean government has bankrolled in part at times. 90%+ of the english kpop discourse not checking or coming from Korean media sources combined with any music fanbase's tendency to mythologize artists creates a very distorted version of events. Demand that was fought for tooth and nail by acts like BoA, Rain, SNSD, WG, 2NE1, BB, EXO, etc. There's no BTS demand without the millions and millions of dollars of investment that went into the market before them. Every subsequent US debut was bigger and more long-lasting than the last, the BTS succeeded where others failed narrative was invented by hybe pr. So were 1st gen acts, just like how there was a solid decade of progress before BTS in the west, there was an even longer climb in China. What I'm trying to get at is that acts like BTS and EXO and even Big Bang are more markers for general trends and industry growth than they are sacred successes to which we owe everything as kpop fans. If it wasn't them the industry would have found others to push. edit: there are exceptions to this though like Gangnam Style coming completely out of nowhere and making massive inroads for kpop without much external force. Also going back to the first time I quoted you, that BTS had a much more successful global push than EXO and pretending that they cannot be compared is unfair. hate delulus who think bts invented kpop when really their timing was extremely lucky. they're no diff than their peers BlockB, BAP and every other bigbang son that starts with a B circa de 2012 1 2 1

Adama Posted July 19, 2023 Posted July 19, 2023 I do think BTS were pioneers in the way groups are handling social media (unfortunately). They were the ones who were doing lives and using Twitter to connect with their fans. + they used to put a lot of contents on YouTube. Also they also were the pioneers in term of stage performances, and one of the reason why groups now focus more on dancing
