X~MoviePoP Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 If anyones a mechanic can you give me advice before i pay someone to diagnose it. My cars loud when i start it and also Pretty loud when its running/when im driving, feels like its taking forever to accelerate but most importantly im smelling fumes in my car when im driving, like its a strong smell. What does this mean? Google says its an exhaust leak, whats the cost of something like that and also is the exhaust apart of the engine block?
PoisonedIvy Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Shut up and drive Jk. It’s definitely an engine problem if you hear it as you start up your car. If it’s specifically an exhaust leak that shouldn’t be more than a couple hundred dollars for repair, if it’s anything worse though, full engine replacements can run you up a couple thousand dollars. take what I say lightly though, I’m not an expert but I have a friend who works on cars and he talks to me about them every now and then. If someone else pops in with better advice take their word over mine! I’m also dealing with car trouble rn so I sympathize with ya

Whats crazy is i just got a whole new engine 3 weeks ago from my cars dealership. Im not sure if its really doing anything crazy when i start it up its just loud and loud during the drive so thats why i was thinking its an exhaust issue. Especially since im smelling fumes
Witchpop Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 What kind of car do you drive? Is it an SUV. It sounds like you could be missing your catalytic converter. Those are being stolen because they have rare metals that can get people a decent amount of money.

Get it checked out, someone might have popped under and stole it. It only takes a few bolts and minutes max.
sugarysunflower Posted December 12, 2022 Posted December 12, 2022 Indeed it’s likely to be an exhaust leak (if this is coming from Underneath the car, and not from the engine in the hood itself). I had this issue on my old car: 1. Check the exhaust pipe under the car is bolted securely firstly - the bolt may be jiggling and/or the pipe is sitting lower than it should meaning it’s coming into contact with road surfaces more (making the issue worse). 2. Elevate the car in order to see this, or try to park your car on an incline in order to see this. 3. Once it’s on an incline, if everything seems to be bolted okay you’ll otherwise likely see there’s a literal GAP in the pipe somewhere (either the muffler or the rear exhaust pipe I bet) - ask a family member if they can verify a gap (usually the gasket). This is because the pipe has gathered rust over time and has literally disintegrated, or the gasket has just withstood high temperature over time, cracked and left a gap. 4. If you have a good mechanic anywhere between $40-100. If you’re trying to cut costs, you won’t need the ENTIRE pipe refitted, you can either have the section you need cut out and welded in, or you can have the gap welded together with same material as the original pipe (for safety purposes I’d look into the former). If the mechanic says you need a new part, take pictures beforehand going to the mechanic, and see if you can get a replacement part or a gasket replacement at an auto-parts shop beforehand cos the mechanic may charge you 3x for the same part. Hope this helps x

If I’m not mistaken. That’s the part of the car where the fumes travel through and get released out of the exhaust pipe at the back? (See image below) (and not an engine problem which will come from the front of your car, which is where you check your oil, water, windscreen wash, car battery etc etc). This is where the bulky part of the engine sits. For clarity, please familiarise yourself with the following diagram it’s not too difficult to understand, and it’ll help you become a better driver Edited December 13, 2022 by sugarysunflower
