Since they are non-binary, I wouldn't even label them as "gay." 

 

"Androphilic" is a better term to describe their sexual orientation.

The image is just not image-ing. 

 

It's virtually impossible in one lifetime to reinvent the wheel of fame, which for 100s of years has been built on a mix of attractiveness, appeal, and categorization. 

 

Sam is hard because of the metamorphic changes they've undergone and a few glaring issues alongside that.

 

They emerged on the scene as the "male Adele" and comfortably excelled in that box and lane. They amassed an audience with an appetite for that analogue sound, aesthetic, etc. 

 

Now, they announced their non-binary status (which is fine and applaudable) and have pretty intensely attempted to pivot the image towards flamboyance, glitz, and glamor. The problem is that they are just not gifted in that to pull it off. Cannot dance (gives drunk uncle-gworl at the club), the dressing is a mess (and unflattering) and they do not ooze the sexiness they are trying to sell. 

 

It's also confusing to the audience. The existing base ain't going up for that and the prospective base are already well-served on that front from the likes of Lil Nas X and Harry Styles (on a more critically acclaimed tip). 

 

IMO, Unholy was a fluke and the problems above ...if unaddressed...make it unlikely that consistent commercial success will be on the cards.

 

The saving grace for Sam is the fact that they have an established pool of hits they'll be able to perform forever. Also, when they drop this ill-advised desire to give a Gaga/Lil Nas X, they'll always have the more analogue/stripped back angle to play up again. So, all isn't lost.

It's not just about their body, but the way they dress is VERY unflattering. On top of that, their demeanor is very femme and that just adds to the ick factor. I'm trying really hard not to be offensive but it's almost impossible when Sam does everything in their power to look as bad as possible.

I don't think this is fair tbh. Sam has multiple hits in Europe and is a radio darling. Diamonds, Promises, Dancing With a Stranger, and now Unholy? The fact that he has the success he has despite his flamboyance and unapologetic attitude means there is something there.

Don’t pay him any mind, he made an essay before Sam released unholy counting them out, Sam has been consistently successful throughout decade long career despite of their public image before/after coming out non binary being mixed or downright negative, GP has an invisible soft spot for Sam they clearly don’t wanna show
