That's the general rule but it's still a case by case basis. It says there "reasonable force" should be used and the court decides what constitutes reasonable force based on evidence. Therefore, not all self defense can save you completely from liability. Just saying...

The man clearly saw from where he was in the parking lot that she was being attacked, that's why he sped up to try and help her. She didn't almost get run over
