With the budget being $35M, this is a resounding success for everyone involved.

remonkrk009 Posted January 10 Posted January 10 So i just went to the premiere in my home country. I had to get used to the idea of seeing the same story done with different people, but during the middle of the movie i could let it go and it was just a fun watch. It's not close to it's original, not at all, but it brought back so much nostalgia and the songs were actually pretty good. There was a lot of security at the premiere (cause of you maybe know what) what was a cute moment in the movie. The whole time i was thinking to myself: "would i have liked this movie if i didn't knew the original" and i'm still debating...
Brycee Posted January 11 Posted January 11 this was a lot of fun! i think they did a great job mixing the original with the musical, but still having their own twist. avantika truly stole the show in my opinion, i loved every second she was on screen. Spoiler i loved that lindsay made a cameo! was not expecting that, but loved it. wish they had the other girls in it some how. 3

It missed a lot of story beats from the original. Also random that they kept so many jokes line for line, but did away with some of the most iconic ones, even ones that weren't PrObLeMaTiC...
rac7d Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Renne rapp went to the Beyoncé school didn’t she somone gets hurt incredible also this movie feels like it’s was directed by todrick hall but not in a bad way his old stuff was fetch
Bhabylon Posted January 12 Posted January 12 This was surprisingly good and fun the audience was so into it and cracking up the whole time
Tangane Posted January 12 Posted January 12 I looooooooooved the movie! The way they smartly and subtly rewrote the story was PERFECT. Renee Rapp is such a GOOD Regina! They basically made her the main character and I live for it! (If they wanted to avoid that, they should have chosen another actress to play Cady, sorry sis ) Most important: I DID come back to some of the songs once I came back from the cinema!
fridayteenage Posted January 13 Posted January 13 i wonder if sabrina carpenter woulda gotten more attention as cady; she had a stint playing her on broadway. People seem rather unexcited by Rice. 1

Angourie's a great actress and she was serviceable but I felt her performance was def missing something (and I'm not just talking about her vocals - although I think they set her up casting her in the central role of a musical alongside people like Renee/Auli'i/Jaquel) Edited January 13 by okgo
ATRL Moderator Ampersand13 Posted January 13 ATRL Moderator Posted January 13 Was it totally necessary? Probably not, but I thoroughly enjoyed my showing and really appreciated a lot of the choices they made. I will say, I wish it had a slightly bigger budget and was treated like a theatrical release from production because the choreography, cinematography and cast were so strong I think it could have been even further elevated with more support. I get why they didn't but when you have so much undeniable talent might as well go all out. Honestly, a miracle this film turned out as strongly as it did. Had a really fun time watching and some absolute standout performances

I also wasn’t impressed with her transformation, not nearly as glamorous as Lohan. Sabrina Proably would have had some more spice but still innocence . And would fair better opposition Rapp 1
MusicLoverDude Posted January 14 Posted January 14 The fact that this came out the day before my 30th meant that I was absolutely gonna go to this this weekend. I REALLY enjoyed this and loved Renee as Regina. Avantika was a hilarious Karen. Loved some of the references! my Mom and I will be seeing it tomorrow so I'll be seeing it twice!
shelven Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Cuter than I expected! I expected the dialogue that deviated from the original to be super cringey, but most of the new jokes felt natural and were pretty funny. Ironically, one of my main complaints with the film is I wish they had relied less on reusing jokes from the original since they were all predictable and tired for people who have seen the original multiple times But I had a lot of fun. Jaquel Spivey and Avantika absolutely stole the show, they both slayed hard. 1
CroNich Posted January 14 Posted January 14 (edited) I have mixed feelings about the movie. On the plus side it actually was laugh out loud funny throughout, the performances (particularly Regina and Karen) were great and really carried the movie for me. The not so good; and I don’t think if you can blame any one other than the person who thought it was a good idea to turn the musical adaptation of a movie back into a movie *cough* Tina *cough*. But you forego a lot of the character development, storyline arcs, building of tension and timing/pacing for the sake of these big musical numbers. It almost feels like a parody of the original at points, with them rushing through some of the iconic lines/moments without giving us the important in betweens that really build up the characters and the relationships and the story itself. Like if you had never seen the original (which I doubt is the case for anyone but alas) you would probably be watching and trying to figure out wtf is going on. Definitely would watch again but it does not hold a candle to the original unfortunately. 7/10. Edited January 14 by CroNich 1
okgo Posted January 14 Posted January 14 Avantika and Renee stay going viral during this press cycle we love to see it 2
Draper. Posted January 14 Posted January 14 This was really good! It has visual ideas which is what makes a great adaptation, the rhythm, transitions and editing is really good and engaging too. Avantika, Jaquel, Renée and Busy kill their roles. They keep EVERY iconic joke and build from there. Love the appearances from old cast members and the adaptation of the story to 2024 with social network and a more diverse cast. Some cute small references to Barbie, Clueless and thank u next which are great. I will surely watch again since the original is one of my comfort movies and this is great to switch it up sometimes. The only two things I didn’t quite like: Spoiler The new Christmas number, the original is way too iconic. The ending. I loved the final scene in the original.
