They made Matilda the musical, from the Broadway musical based on the movie.

 

They're shooting The color purple, from the Broadway musical based on the movie and also Sunset boulevard, from the Broadway musical based on the movie.

 

 

Im' feeling Billie Elliott musical Is One of the next. 

 

Modern Hollywood Is obsessed with brands, reboots and remakes.

Doing that with (recent) drama movies doesn't work as for other genres like horror/action/ fantasy so I Guess it's their way to make a remake but in a new way people can embrace or accept more.

It's not really that new of an idea. Hairspray wasn't originally a musical, then it became one on Broadway, then they made a movie musical.

 

I agree it's definitely not necessary, especially because the musical is not very good but I digress...
