How the law on the ban on LGBT propaganda will work” on the site of the National News Service agency, an event which was organised to explain to media, human rights activists & journalists how the new anti-LGBT propaganda law will work deputy Tatiana Butskaya said:

Russian government recently passed a law, that prohibits any mention of LGBTQ+ in positive or neutral connotations on the internet, tv, radio, books & etc. Before that LGBT-propaganda was only forbidden among minors and materials containing information or imagery about LGBT had to be marked 18+.

If t.A.T.u. were to release "All The Things She Said" in today's Russia -  they would be fined up to $165,289.25. It's very likely that t.A.T.u.'s music will probably be banned in Russia.

t.A.T.u. haven't yet responded.

She did say that "A man shouldn't be a f*g", but later retracted her statement, saying that producers set her up and the final edit of the program was misleading.

by 2002 standards - no, t.A.T.u raised LGBT awareness among a lot of young people around the world & helped queer kids accept what they are, even given the fact that the group members weren't in love themselves

this "queer baiting" rhetoric is useless when you apply it to anything before late 00's when gay community finally started gaining some commercial power, back in the 2001 t.A.T.u not only were not played on the radio, banned on British tv channels, blacklisted from big venues across Europe for their LGBTQ+ themes, but also massively criticised for "corrupting the children"

looking back now it's easy to call them "scam", but it took a lot of courage at the time to stand against the mainstream while defending not widely accepted human rights issue

Lena said that, yes. At the time, Chechnya investigation was not published yet and things were considered relatively ok for LGBTQ.
