I was a massive fan of Avril when Let Go and Under My Skin were out, to the point I had posters of her on my wall. She started to lose me when she released The Best Damn Thing and I just didn’t really check for her after that. Hearing Tomorrow on The Last of Us made me remember how many good memories I had with her first two albums, so I’ve decided to do a deep dive into her discography and listen to everything I’ve missed.

The Best Damn Thing was a lot better than I remember it being and I feel I judged it too harshly back in the day. I forgot how beautiful Innocence was. I’m currently on Goodbye Lullaby and my next track to play is Stop Standing There. My favourite tracks so far have been Push and Wish You Were Here but some of the production has been quite jarring. Black Star and Push sound like they’re from a completely different album to What the Hell, Wish You Were Here and Smile, so I have no idea what to expect with these following tracks. I’ll pop back in here when I’ve heard the entire thing.

You’re currently experiencing her most vulnerable record and magnum opus to say at least. <3

I just heard I’m a Mess for the first time on a Canadian Station :duca: It’s a station that never played it before so hopefully it’s finally coming here

Overall I think Goodbye Lullaby was a solid album. I was just thrown off by the change of production on a few of the tracks. I’m not sure if there’s any actual reason behind it, but some of the songs just don’t sound like they were supposed to be on this record, which for the most part, was very stripped back.

I’d say the middle part of the album was the strongest, with Push, Wish You Were Here, Stop Standing There, I Love You, Everybody Hurts, Not Enough and Darlin being the standouts. This was definitely reminiscent of the Avril I originally fell in love with, but with a twist. It was nice hearing her vocals taking control.

Alice was…interesting. I loved the bridge and the verses weren’t awful, but that chorus hurt my ears. It was so loud and scratchy. The version I listened to also had Bad Reputation on there, which was a bop, but had no place on this album. Am I missing some sort of backstory as to why it’s included? :rip:

Let me give Not Enough another play before I move onto self-titled. :jamming:

Skip the studio version of Alice and listen to this live one instead!

Oh wow, this is so much better than the studio version. I’m not sure why she’s so shrill and scratchy on that one. She sounds amazing here. :alexz3:

It's because this is in a different key, though I'm sure she could have used different vocal takes for the studio version to make it sound a little less harsh (I still love it though)

CIHT-FM Ottawa 89.9 FM. So now both Ottawa top 40 stations are playing it.

We need the Toronto stations to catch up :biblio:

YEA the Alice studio version was always a no for me. My ears couldn't take those notes. 🙉 This live version is beautiful.

Also I think Bad Reputation was for a movie. It was not included in the original release of Goodbye Lullaby.

Listen, it's messy but cute for a throwback. That being said Bitchin' Summer, Let Me Go, Bad Girl, Give You What You Like, RnR, HTNGU, Hello Heartache, Hush Hush, and Falling Fast >>>

Avril Lavigne and Head Above Water are by far her worst albums. Love Sux is a return to form.

We’ve one user on here who constantly defends Avril Lavigne but it’s generally considered a terrible album.

Let Go and Goodbye Lullaby are her best records by a mile

the good songs on self-titled are all career highlights but the rest is some of the worst **** ever recorded :rip:

but prepare yourself because the second half of Head Above Water is even worse :deadbanana2:

Self-Titled was an experience to say the least. It had some career highs like Give You What You Like and Falling Fast and then career lows like Sippin’ On Sunshine. I kept 8/13 songs on my gym playlist!

The edition I listened to also had Bad Reputation on it, did she lose a bet? :rip:

I’ll listen to Head Above Water and Love Sux tomorrow and let you know what I think. You have me intrigued and nervous for Head Above Water. :rip:

Bad Reputation and How You Remind Me were part of the One Piece Film Z soundtrack (which came out between Goodbye Lullaby and self-titled). Bad Reputation is actually one of her biggest hits in Japan.

It’s a great cover, I just wasn’t expecting it to be a bonus track on Goodbye Lullaby and Self-Titled. It works better on Self-Titled.

And that’s all we need to know about what you think of self titled.

idk why but SOS slaps much harder in 2023 than it ever did.

you just have to have a positive outlook on life while you listen and it's amazing.

Let Go and UMS are masterpieces, no explanation needed.

Goodbye Lullaby is better than Adele’s 21, but not as good as Avril’s first three.

Self-titled has some of Avril’s highest highs but some of her lowest lows.

HAW is not as bad as the Avrilizers make it out to be - there are some questionable choices though.

Love Sux is her best album since the first 3 albums.
