It depends where in the world you are and if you're using British or American English. 

 

What we call "football" is "soccer" in America, and when they say "football" they mean "American football".

I live in the US but most people I know who watch the sport are immigrants from elsewhere… so I interchange, football when I’m talking to them or people from other countries, soccer when I’m talking to Americans

 

Not a big deal at all but some Americans get so heated when they hear “football” referring to not the NFL and some non-Americans get so heated when they hear “soccer”. It’s just a difference of dialect
