Seoul, South Korea (AP) -- South Korean officials said around 50 people were in cardiac arrest and a number feared dead after being crushed by a large crowd pushing forward on a narrow street during Halloween festivities in the capital Seoul.

Choi Cheon-sik, an official from the National Fire Agency, said around 100 people were reported as injured during the crowd surge Saturday night in the Itaewon leisure district and that around 50 were being treated for cardiac arrest as of early Sunday.

Choi said it was believed that people were crushed to death after a large crowd began pushing forward in a narrow alley near Hamilton Hotel, a major party spot in Seoul.

He said more than 400 emergency workers from around the nation, including practically all available personnel in Seoul, were deployed to the streets to treat the injured. Officials didn’t immediately release a death toll.

Video on social media showed first responders administering CPR on multiple people lying in the street.

Police also confirmed that dozens of people were being given CPR on Itaewon streets while many others have been taken to nearby hospitals.

A local police officer said he was also informed that a stampede occurred on Itaewon’s streets where a crowd of people gathered for Halloween festivities. The officer requested anonymity, saying the details of the incident was still under investigation.

Some local media reports earlier said the crush happened after a large number of people rushed to an Itaewon bar after hearing an unidentified celebrity visited there.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a statement calling for officials to ensure swift treatment for those injured and review the safety of the festivity sites. He also instructed the Health Ministry to swiftly deploy disaster medical assistance teams and secure beds in nearby hospital to treat the injured.

Crowd surges are no joke as we have seen many times in the last few years, especially with the Astroworld tragedy. I hope this doesn't end up like that.

From Bloomberg:

About 120 people were killed and another 100 injured following a stampede at a Halloween party in Seoul’s Itaewon area.

The stampede took place Saturday night in the popular nightlife district of Itaewon, after a large number of people entered the Hamilton Hotel via a narrow alleyway, Yonhap News reported, citing South Korean fire authorities. Pictures and videos posted online showed people lying in the streets receiving first aid and being taken to ambulances.

President Yoon Suk Yeol held another emergency meeting Sunday, Yonhap said, following an earlier briefing in the immediate aftermath of the stampede. He ordered ministries to provide swift first aid and treatment to those injured in the accident and to review safety measures.

The stampeded occurred as more than 100,000 people were estimated to have gathered in Itaewon for the annual Halloween festivities, the first since South Korea last month lifted pandemic-era rules requiring outdoor mask-wearing.

Yonhap reported earlier that emergency officials were treating roughly 50 people for cardiac arrest after receiving at least 81 calls from people.

The police issued an emergency measure to fully operate available resources, while about 140 ambulances were dispatched to the accident area, Yonhap said.

As of 1 a.m. Sunday, about 21 people had been sent to emergency rooms, mostly women in their 20s, according to the report.

:frown: praying for those affected and in Seoul right now

Just saw this on BBC, it seems like this was a Astroworld style stampede sadly. Apparently people were singing S*x on The Beach while emergency were on the scene :biblio:

This is ******* scary because of how unpredictable it is. One second you're just bothered by how slow everyone moves forward, next thing you know a panic breaks out of nowhere and you're body is thrown around. This is the failure of the authorities.

Do I understand this right tho? This happened because there were too many people in a certain district to party in different bars/clubs? This wasn't an organised event? Cause in that case it will be difficult to hold someone accountable in court I imagine.

This is why I always take fire code and other regulations so seriously. What a horrific thing to through. I hope the organizers of the event are held accountable

Jesus Christ... the first reports were extremely concerning but I am absolutely shocked by the number of victims.
