IBeMe Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 This is going to be Elton's most successful decade since the 90s So far he snatched himself 3 hits and it is only 2022. Cold Heart #1 in the UK / #7 in the US (huge peaks globally) Merry Christmas #1 in the UK / #55 in the US (pretty good peaks globally) Hold Me Closer #3 in the UK / predicted to be anywhere from #7 to #12 in the US (huge peaks worldwide so far) Also his Lockdown Sessions album went on to be almost Platinum in the UK. Impressive much? Is Elton setting the blueprint for how to achieve success in your 70s for the other popgirls/boys?
trainsskyscrapers Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 (edited) It's almost as if his "swan-song" era with Rocketman, Lion King etc. didn't garner enough attention as Covid-19 outsold him..... so he's still here. Looks a tad desperate. These duets cheapen the quality of the originals. Is he trying to surpass the sales of his arch-nemesis Madonna before he actually retires? Asparagus Spears Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 It’s great that he’s having this success but this will never be Madonna, simply because she’s a woman. It’s unfair and I’d love to see older artists still have success the way Elton is… it gives us all hope that we won’t have to think our lives are over at 40
alfonso12 Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 It's kinda impressive but at the same time it's not THAT impressive cause he's basically recycling old hits.

GreatestLoveofAll Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 ^^ all my opinion at least. OT: as he should! glad he's having a resurgence and embracing new talents and being business-savvy. So many legends dont get that sort of freedom or chance.
Erreur2 La Nature Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 This is impressive because he is old and still getting hits. Let’s be honest though, if he was releasing solo singles they’d bomb (at least in the US). But I think it really interesting how he is reinventing his own classics with Cold Heart and Hold Me Closer. I can see him setting a trend where artists will rework some of their classics once they get older.
MotoPapi Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 It’s crazy how Madonna gets dragged and called desperate by working with younger hot artists while this man gets praised for it… the misogyny…
josesuxx Posted September 2, 2022 Posted September 2, 2022 I'd love to see him get a hit without a feature!

I don't find it impressive, I would say that's just taking the easy way by re-using songs that were certified hits instead of trying to do something new, it's low key mediocre tbh. Still, impressive, but I don't think it's as impressive as having hits with brand new material.

Then songs that use old samples also aren't impressive. It's about bringing his older catalog to a new generation with a fresh new added touch and sound. Still sounds much better than 80% of modern music despite being recycled! 13 minutes ago, josesuxx said: I'd love to see him get a hit without a feature! Recording new solo music with his current crow vocals? Doubt it.

That's right, that's why "artists" like Pitbull (On the floor, Feel this moment, I know you want me, Hotel room service) and Flo Rida (Right Round, Sugar, Good Feeling) own like half of their big hits to the use of samples of old hits.
EnigmaticAndroid Posted September 3, 2022 Posted September 3, 2022 That's what happens where you're actually beloved and have real classics

Jay07 Posted September 3, 2022 Posted September 3, 2022 Yeah I think he's been very smart in repackaging and selling his legacy. Rocketman was a hit and these quick lil remixes are hitting too but he's not controversial and abrasive like Madonna so that helps. Also, the quality of the remixes is high, they're very classy and easy to enjoy on a night out or whatever. Meanwhile Madonna releases trash like Frozen on Fire and Material Gworl which literally **** all over the amazing originals.
jdanton2 Posted September 3, 2022 Posted September 3, 2022 Elton had originally set the record for most years in a row charting on the Hot 100 for 31 years .Elvis Presley and Madonna did it for 23 years. https://www.songfacts.com/blog/writing/elton-john-31-year-hit-streak

Dua Lipa and Ed Sheeran are certified hit makers right now. Britney not so much, but her post-freedom comeback was bound to generate a lot of media attention that would translate to streams. And Cold Heart/Hold Me Closer fit the smooth, vibey, disco-influenced sound that is popular on radio right now. So naturally Elton’s efforts succeeded. Madonna might be collabing with artists who can snag U.S. hits every now and then (Nicki, Maluma) but they are not hit makers in the same vein as Elton’s collaborators. Nor were Medellin and ***** I’m Madonna as radio friendly as Cold Heart/Hold Me Closer. I don’t think we can count Madonna out yet, because she hasn’t been trying. People criticize her for “chasing hits,” but I haven’t heard anything that sounds remotely like a hit featuring another popular artist since Give Me All Your Luvin. I think if she collaborated with a popular hit maker on a radio friendly song, she’d have a chance.
