Production_101 Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 It’s a highly beloved song, arguably her best and it got paid dust. How come?
Badgalbriel Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 Well, Work was still doing its thing. And also the album was already released, so it would be hard to have a single song stand out when people were still excited about the whole album
ABeyBraith Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 ??? Doesn’t it have hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify? How is that a song being paid dust? Charts are not always reflective of how popular a song is. It’s all about longevity. There are number one songs that have been completely forgotten.
americanlife Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 It was a hit, just not a Billboard chart hit. It’s definitely one of her signature songs.
Production_101 Posted August 19, 2022 Author Posted August 19, 2022 I always assumed Billboard was reflective of all the Spotify, iTunes, etc.
istan4badgalriri Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 it's kind of a successful flop: 2x Platinum in the US, Gold in the UK, about to hit 300M streams on Spotify (with 250k daily streams, over 6 years later) but when it got sent to radio in 2016, it got ate up by Needed Me, This Is What You Came For, Work & Too Good
GrandeVersace Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 The Navy probably preferred Needed me. Kiss it better is a career highlight. Idk what went wrong.
Maxxie Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 This is a weird one. Low chart peaks and radio play but everyone I know loves and knows this song. It could have been huge had she released this when Needed Me/Work/TIWYCF/Too Good had died down. I believe the original plan for ANTI was to release LOTB and KIB as the first two singles? Not sure what happened but I think the era could have been much bigger I’d it was handled properly. On a side note, how do we think the new era will be handled? I’d hope for a lead and music video and maybe a second single. I think she may just drop the album at once though
Oxy Posted August 19, 2022 Posted August 19, 2022 Idk. But it’s my choice of songs that sounds/feels bigger than their commercial performance.

EriKills Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 Co-writer Natalia Kills her floppage curse was too powerful I fear. 1
RihFenty20 Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 (edited) Rihanna simply had too many songs doing well at one time. The first mistake was not performing it at the Grammys like she was suppose to (I believe it was the choice for the lead instead of Work). Then It was sabotaged in favour of Needed Me (which was also sabotaged as KIB was stealing its pop airplay push) and further sabotaged because Sex With Me also started blowing up at the time she wanted to push the song. It also didn’t help that Work and TIWYFC were still smashing. So between Work, TIWYCF, Needed Me and Sex With Me. It got lost. It won in the end as it’s been gaining steadily and recently resurged, but definitely could’ve been bigger had it not have to share the spotlight. Edited August 20, 2022 by RihFenty20 lol spelling
PopPrince Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 Remember when she was going to perform it at 2016 Grammys? There were commercials about her performance and everything OT: probably because radio was moving in more of a hip hop direction so they smartly focused on needed me
navykesha Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 The video was boring and killed all it potential
DRjuss06 Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 Honestly, now listening to it, it doesn’t sound like a pop song, or at least not anything like her other smashing songs at the moment. But as mentioned above, the song is amazing and a fan favorite. It also got a Grammy nomination (which it should’ve won tbh) so that’s pretty memorable.

She was supposed to perform LOTB at the BRITs in February 2015 so I guess it was supposed to be the second single or a promo single after FourFiveSeconds and she shot the video for KIB in December 2015 (before she shot Work) so maybe it was the initial "new" first single

KKCuteCat Posted August 21, 2022 Posted August 21, 2022 Almost all of her second singles flopped/underperformed. Another example is You Da One. Everyone thought it was a hit but it peaked in top 20 and then fell fast and become a non-event. My guess is that she released it too soon when radio was still playing Work and it was completely outshined by its predecessor
