So was she getting royalties to being with? What was for the meltdown for?

No she was never gonna get any royalties for the umpteenth time. :rip:

Her complaint was mostly about Pharrell/The Neptunes stealing her publishing and she also didn't appreciate that no one from Beyoncé's camp had the common courtesy to notify her that Bey sampled her song.

---

Some background info on how the Neptunes ripped her off:

"Kelis made it with her then close friend Pharrell and Chad Hugo, AKA the Neptunes, after meeting them through a mutual friend at performing arts school. She was 19 at the time. “I thought it was a beautiful and pure, creative safe space,” she says. “But it ended up not being that at all.”

The story of the music industry is one of young artists getting ripped off, again and again, because they are too young to understand the contracts they have signed until it is too late. What is different in Kelis’s case, she says, is that it was her friends who ripped her off.

“I was told we were going to split the whole thing 33/33/33, which we didn’t do,” she says. Instead, she says, she was “blatantly lied to and tricked”, pointing specifically to “the Neptunes and their management and their lawyers and all that stuff”. As a result, she says she made nothing from sales of her first two albums, which were produced by the Neptunes. But she did not notice for a few years, because she was making money from touring, “and just the fact that I wasn’t poor felt like enough”, she says. She sighs: “Their argument is: ‘Well, you signed it.’ I’m like: ‘Yeah, I signed what I was told, and I was too young and too stupid to double-check it.’” (Pharrell and Hugo did not respond to repeated requests for comment.)

And they were your friends so you trusted them, I say.

“Yeah, it’s amazing,” she shrugs.

She doesn’t sound angry. “No, I’m just stating the facts,” she says. I ask why she isn’t angry.

“To be honest with you, I think if it were not for my faith, I feel like that would probably be the case. It’s very clear to me, especially being on a farm, that whatever you put in the ground, that is what’s going to come back to you,” she says.

Things eventually came crashing down, she says, when she made her third album, Tasty, and decided to work with a variety of producers, not just the Neptunes, “and I could tell they were really offended”.

But she has seen Pharrell. A few years back, he was performing at an industry event and she was in the audience. “And he did that thing to me that he’s notorious for, which is making a nod from the stage [to someone in the audience], so it seems like there’s mutual respect, when in reality …” She throws her head back and laughs. “I’m like, OK, I’m not going to yell back: ‘You stole all my publishing!’ So you end up nodding back and everyone thinks everything’s great. Like, whatever.”

Would she work with him again? She looks at me as if I have asked if she would jump into a shark tank: “Ummm, at that point there’s having faith and there is also just stupidity.”

Kelis did not talk about any of this publicly for years. Another secret that she kept until recently is that, according to her, Nas, her first husband, physically abused her. She first mentioned this in an interview in 2018, nine years after she left him while seven months pregnant with their child."

9 pages over 10 seconds of background noise from a song Kelis didn't even write/produce :toofunny2: the way Bey has them haters fuming :ahh:

People on here would spend hours crying over Taylor not owning masters. But Kelis is painted the villain for literally suffering actual mistreatment.

You realize the issue is literally the fact that Pharrell cheated out on her royalties and credits right?

Yeah but you think Beyoncé fans are going to feel sorry for her after all the **** she has been saying? She has no class. She was ranting before even hearing the song. Typical loud mouth

I already took it back. No need to get nasty.

So someone was given credit by Beyonce's team where they didn't originally have any, now they lost those credits, sounds like Kelis played herself here :clown:

LOUDER. :jonny:

Just imagine if Ariana used a sample of an original Taylor song to which Scooter owns the rights and she didn't even have the common decency to call Taylor in order to notify her that she was going to sample her song and just asked Scooter for permission to use it.

Everyone would be furious at Ariana and rightfully so but because it's Beyoncé it's fine because "she went through the proper legal channels". The hypocrisy of it all. :deadbanana4:

You were nasty first and then in addition to that, you were blatantly wrong.

But, you need to get into the original. She ate it right on up :clap3:

You would too if you were cheated out of your music.

No, I would definitely cuss out The Neptunes again and again for takin advantage of me back when I didn't know better, but I wouldn't even mention Beyoncé, let alone attack her for an insignificant 10 seconds sample which she had no power over in it's original dealings 20 years ago. Like that's some crazy technicality to keep up with considering the millions of credit on this album.

And how is that Beyoncé's problem? She already got rid of the sample so you and Kelis can keep Bey's name out of your mouths, if she's really concerned, worried and devastated about getting cheated on she can settle that situation in a courtroom with Pharrel AND The Neptunes, not ranting here and there on social media, aiming at a woman that has nothing to do with any of that bs while calling her names and spreading lies, that's tacky

She didn't have a credit on the original song, but Beyoncé expressly gave her one so she WOULD receive credit and ergo royalties. Kelis then proceeded to throw a public meltdown, trashing her persona and labelling her a satanist, just further proving that it was never about the sample. All the ***** did was EMBARRASS herself in the process and throw away any ounce of credibility she had. Now she gets NOTHING like the crab in the bucket deserves. Makes you wonder which erased 2000s R&B fad is going to come out of the woodworks and try it with her next. :clownny:Hurling personal attacks at people as though they're helping your case. How embarrassing for you.

Why would anyone be furious? Hypothetically, Ariana went the legal route as she was supposed to. You don’t have to contact the actual artist to receive brownie points from them.

At the end of the day, Kelis was upset that she didn’t get a check for a song she didn’t write. Ironically, she still isn’t going to get anything at all since Beyonce removed the entire sample. So, all that commotion was for absolutely nothing. How stupid of her.

At this point, the people that care about this situation need to create a flop thread about the Neptunes swindling Kelis out of her masters. As long as Beyonce's name is attached to this story, we will rightfully drag Kelis for her trash, clownish behavior. Making jokes about Bey being satanic is the furthest from female empowerment, so she's also a hypocrite.

For the umpteenth time Beyoncé stans: a "as performed by x" mention on streaming platforms is NOT a proper credit and won't get anyone any royalties. And Kelis didn't even blame Beyoncé for not crediting her but because she didn't have the common courtesy to notify her that she was going to sample her song.

So loud and SO WRONG. :clownny:

Did she have to have it?

Do you think that Beyoncé gets a personal call from everyone who samples her songs even though she has credits and owns her songs? How many people sampled Say My Name, did they all call girls from Destiny’s Child to have their permission? And did they call them satanists on the internet after not calling them?

Of course it was noticeable to THEM they are scrounging for scraps and now even the scraps are gone.

OT: I’m loving the song getting all this attention and free promo & Kelis ending up with nothing.

Common courtesy? :ahh:For Christ's sake, it was 10 seconds of background music that NOBODY could tell was even there to begin with. Please tell me you don't actually expect Beyoncé - or any other performing artist for that matter - to go out of their way to give someone a head's up whenever they're sampling or interpolating less than 10 seconds of their music into their song. Is Beyoncé at fault for the issues Kelis had with Pharrell and his production team now? How does any of that warrant her taking cheap jabs at her online? For someone who loves to condescendingly question people's intelligence you sure lack critical thinking skills of your own. :clownny:
